I have to assume that folks getting past 130 with an E320 or E430 are 1) non US delivery cars or 2) modded to remove the 130 mph limiter. My E430 is rock solid at the limiter; it pulls strongly up to 129 and just settles down at 130 (on Bridgestone SO-3 Pole Positions).

I am not sure why your limiter is at 130mph? It should be at 155mph. I have not modded my car in any way. I'm in Arizona and I have three cars all have been well above 130mph but none have gone over 155mph.

I quote from the official Technical Data for your 2000 E430:

"Top speed (mph) 130 (electronically limited)"

For the E-Class, only the E55's are limited to 155. The original reason for this limitation was the fact that M-B was fitting the cars with tires having a speed rating "H" - 130 mph. They carried that policy forward, even though the cars with the sport package are fitted with tires rated for higher speeds.

In 2000 the following cars were limited to 130: C230, C280, E320, E430, CLK320, CLK500, S430, S500. The C43, E55, CL500, SL500, SL600 are electronically limited to 155. The SLK is not electronically limited but only does 140. The ML320 and ML430 were limited to 112. The ML55 was limited to 144.

Well my E430 is a sport so I am not sure if that matters or not but I have a ticket going 149 and believe me I was decelerating when I was clocked because the car was floating and had maxed out at 155. I have never heard of a limiter at 130 but I believe you. I have had my 2000 SL500 up around 147 with the top down and no mods on that car either. It is easy here in the desert once you are out of town because it is so flat and open. BTW when I got the ticket for 149 it was in September of 2000 in my 1999 E430 which is the same year as yours. It was just over a year old at the time and I didn't make any changes to it either. (Also a sport). Also on a side note the BMW I was racing 540i was a '97 and was also limited at 155mph. We both hit it but he was a car length ahead of me by then. Otherwise very close race. Lots of trouble followed as you might imagine!

As a westerner (California native) who moved east only a few years ago, I am familiar with open road sections where our cars can easily hit top speed. I am also aware that most jurisdictions in the West will arrest you and impound your car if you are caught exceeding 100 mph. Around 1990 it became formal CHP policy to do so. Additionally, your license is automatically suspended.

Regardless, the 130 mph limiter is pretty common knowledge amoung M-B enthusiasts. The Technical Data makes no distinction for the sport package. If there is a difference, perhaps one of the techs on the board can chime in. Most of the programmers selling ECUs disable the limiter. Most enthusiasts find it frustrating.

I wish I could say that I was making that up but it happened and the car certainly didn't stop at 130mph. And yes both my car and his went away that evening on a flat bed tow truck to the impound yard. I skipped reading tech specs and decided to do a little testing myself. It goes to 155mph. Trust me. :p

I went 115 MPH on my test drive with a very nervous dealer in the car. It finally stopped him from giving me the "you'll look like a rockstar in this thing" sales pitch!
I ended up buying the car 2 weeks later (97 e420)

In 2000 there was no CLK 500 i'm sure you meant CLK 430 but whatever it is definatly not limited to 130 i took it up to 140 or so and it was didn't really float but since its a convertible there was some noise with the top up. I took my E 320 to 120 so next time i'll test and see if there is a limiter at 130
