Headlight Options

I merely have old fashioned 2000 era headlights. What can I do to improve the low beam visibilty without spending a fortune? Can I simply go to halogen bulbs? Is there something I'm missing here? If I could simply drive with the high beams on I'd be okay - obviously that won't work!

The regular ones are halogen. You can get a better set of H7 bulbs than the stock ones.

Go here for Salvania SilverStar lights

Know what's amazing? I just saw an ad for the Silvestar lights! Hey, once again, thanks for the shout-out. On the Silverstar site they have four options: "regular," "whitest & brightest," "white hot-super cool," and "long life." For an old fart's eyesight at night, do you have any recommendations? By the way, I'm still trying to peddle the wife's Mitsubishi so I can go after one of those 2002 SLKs...

My god, it's not just the eyes that are going - it's the mind as well! After that last exchange something rattled the pea in my brain: after rummaging in the garage I found a pair of Hoen H7s I bought for my '97 E420. Any reason they wouldn't work in the '00? (Man, what a dummy...)

Yep… those should work… how many watts are they rated at..??

i just upgraded to the Sylvania "Silver Stars" and i’m very pleased with both the color and the increased visibility... the "Extravisions" offer about the same visibility but just aren't as white... kind of more yellow like the standard halogen... may be easier on older eyes... the bright white can be harsh...

here's a little comparison for you...

I just put the Hoens in and went for a spin - nice! Besides testing the "view" I was a bit concerned about the installation of the bulbs themselves - didn't seem to be a real positive connection, but they are apparently just fine. I really like the illumination, although they don't go any further than ordinary halogens. So I just ordered another pair for the high beams and a set for the fog lamps. I could have gotten the Sylvanias in town, but I thought I'd go with a complete set of one brand. By the way, they're 55w if I'm not mistaken. Thanks for the comparison photos.

All righty then… sounds like you got it handled…

yeah… you know i ordered my silver stars online a couple weeks back and this weekend i see them at Wal-Mart for half the price ($19.99)

who knew..?? and just shows-to-go-ya… what-ever that means

i liked your bit about "rummaging in the garage and finding a pair"… i do that sort of thing all the time usually find my stuff in the garage right after i get done installing some new ones… so I think to myself... “these will be for next time”… of course i don’t find them again till after another set has been purchased…

take care….

The sad thing was that I didn't really have to rummage: they were right there in the Car Pile O' Stuff; next to the old [bad] center console compartment - we're hanging on to that, why? And under the original shifter - why, am I going to put that back in to replace the gorgeous burlwood one? Although I only go into Wally-World under duress, still I didn't think of them in this context; the car places wanted $19.95/each for the Sylvanias - the Hoens were $29.95/pair, and shipping is only a couple bucks more than state sales tax. After being used tot he yellowish originals, it was amazing, though! Especially when I turned a dark corner and it was snow on the trees and in the field - with all the white light it was pretty and amazing...
