Wanting an E320...

Hello, I've been looking at E-classes (96-97) and C-classes lately but this headgasket problem is scaring me. Theoretically by the time I get rid of my car it would have about 120,000 miles. Would the head gasket on the I6 make it that far before failing? Wht was the final cost of the headgasket for those who had it replaced?

Also, would the catalytic converters be dead by then too?

The head was redesigned after 95 and was used for 96 and 97 E-Class as well as in the S-Class up to 99. The older SL and the W124 E-Class gave the inline engine a bad name.

R129 and W124's with straight sixes were and still are bulletproof engines.
No problems with headgaskets unless you let the car overheat.[several reasons for that].
As a matter of fact, old I6 engines are more robust than the new V6 and much less prone to mechanical deffect..although not as smooth as the V..
The main thing is not to let your engine overheat[over 115C],and you gasket will be fine....

The I6 is smoother than the V6. It idles better and the motor mounts last longer than the V6. I have Benzes with both and prefer the I6.

This is good to hear! And I do remember something about I6 engines being almost perfectly balanced (therefore smooth).

I agree with TangoRed about the I6 are smoothly balance, since I've noticed how well balance in the engine, when you are turning since you don't have uneven weight between the sides. Additionally, they are very quiet and I like how strong it runs since I have 105k on the clock and I haven't had any mechanical problem.

I have the 96 e320 with the I6 and I had the headgasket replaced last year with the 60k mile checkup. I paid about $1500 for the headgasket and all that stuff at MB dealer in Walnut Creek.
