As you can read in the thread on the other forum, my dealer diagnosed the problem as severe misfiring of the all six cylinders due to excessive backpressure from clogged catalytic converters. Perhaps the material within the converters, that normally falls lose and rattles, had clogged the passageways. They replaced both catalytic converters under extended warranty.

2008 E350 Wagon
bought my 2001 W210 a year ago next month with 74k miles. now I have 97k miles and I've had the following issues:

passenger side rear window regulator failure (~$80 for the part plus $18 for a decent rivet gun to fix)

Mass air sensor (seems to be a guarranteed failure for mb 112 engines).

Preemptively changed the plugs. nothing in particular wrong with the stock ones when I did it. iirc I had around 88k miles at the time.

drain and filled the transmission around 85k miles. highly recommended

motor mounts need to be done. I'm procrastinating on that one.

front pads and rotors need to be done.

windshield wiper reservoir has a small leak in the side. not a big deal, but something I'm going to have to take care of eventually, or just ignore with little to no consequence.

oh, and of course, the cats both went bad (replaced under mb emissions warranty @ 78k miles).

e300d
Cat converters
O2 sensors
rust repair
rear axles fluid leaks
tie rod

all the above covered under warranty. Car has been very nice otherwise and I'm glad we didn't have to pay out of pocket for this stuff. I don't think I'll ever purchase a Benz that doesn't have some factory warranty remaining.

Our local dealership is VERY good and we've had an excellent working relationship with them for 15+ years. If it hadn't been for their overall competence, I think we would have left the MBz family long ago.

slk55lvr,
I started a thread on another forum regarding excessive oil consumption in certain 430 engines. Since I have a M-B with a 430 engine also, I'd like to know the best way to monitor my own consumption. Does your FSS tell you, or are you monitoring yours with the dipstick?
Thanks,
Musikmann

It's pretty good about reporting the need for oil on the display screen after its running for a few mnutes. When I get home I usually check the dipstick then add what's needed. Once I started this routine I've had no problems whatsoever with the car <knocking wood!>

Hey PHXATC,

your sig says you also own a Lexus. How does your list of repairs compare to what you've done to the Lexus. Looks like the Lexus is a year newer, but I'd be curious to know...

Kinda comparing apples to limes...I don't want to start a *****ing contest either!

I purchased the Lexus in November of 2005, as a used 2003 with 13,000 miles on it. Grandma/pa owned it before me, obviously as a grocery getter. I've had exactly one problem with it. Are you ready?

The sunglass holder doesn't latch but about 1 in 4 times when I push it upward to close. THAT'S IT!

So, I've got 2 used vehicles, one with an arm's list of problems (all fixed, mind you) and one with 1 problem. I'm not too hip on MB products compared to Lexus. This is just based on my small unscientific survey with my vehicles. I'm not bashing MB products, I just think their quality sucks comparatively. I still love the car and the features that it offers.

Bottom line...when we are finished, get tired of, or wear out this car and get ready to move on to another car, we won't be purchasing a MB product.

Flamesuit on.
