press the economy button. it will shut off the fan and allow the a/c to work. press auto for a/c or heat. to shut off ,lower the fan to zero bars. economy button is for the fan only-no a/c.

For what it's worth, it used to be. The problem is that the Freon is potentially dangerous if misused - so now (I think) you have to be certified AC person to purchase it. I have seen it in use by a back yard mechanic, and it is not that hard to use at all.

Also, the compresor (or one of the components) uses freon as a lubricant and cooling mechanism. If you are out of freon, the compresor's fail safe will not allow it to work.

Just out of curiosity - what all is involved if a compressor needs to be replaced? I talked with a co-worker and she said it requires the removal of the dash to get to the components. Is this true for our cars?

To replace the compressor, the dash does NOT need to be removed. Everything is done in the engine bay. Some mechanics will remove the front air dam to access the compressor but it is not necessay to do so. The receive/dryer should be replaced at the same time. The whole job should take about 2-3 hours. The compressor is about a $800-900 part.
