Engine Temp
hey guys... lateley my engine has been gettign pretty hot, and the gauge goes up pretty high, unlike usually, when the guage is in the middle, and when i turn the igniton one notch, before the car turns on, the fan seems to be turning on, because the engine is too hot.

The temperature should be only slightly above 80 degrees centigrade. Keep in mind, although you add antifreeze/overboil to prevent the water from boiling over and freezing at extreme temperatures, you definitely don't want it to come anywhere close to 100*C

Mine too. E320 2000 model. In stop and go in summer time, reaches 97 REGARDLESS A/C on or off. But most oif the time is 83 specially in cool, and/or hwy ride.

my car's temp can go up to 95C on a hot summer afternoon. I think I need to check the head gaskets
Other than that like the rest say make sure the temp stays below 100C or you might end up with a warped head. So have the radiator checked

i was having this problem, temp would go to 100+.
changed the thermostat and its been fine.
but now the temp is at about 97 all the time.
with the old thermostat it was around 82.
so i have to check out the temp. rating on the new thermostat.
btw, my headgasket was bad, temp stayed fine. the car just smoked.

the car was shaking and stalling.
the check engine light was on and the low coolant warning light was on.
cylinder # 6 had a coolant leak. it took mercedes 2 visits for them to diagnose the problem.
this was at 40k miles.
the car now has 78k miles and is "fine" (knocks on wood)

I have a 1997 E320 with I6 engine
The reason your car is running warmer than before is because the new thermostat is doing its job right. Unless you see critical temperatures all the time. But make sure that the thermostat is rated at 87 C or what ever that translates to in F.
the thermostat opens at 87 C so that is the lowest temperature the car sees on any given day. How I monitor this is just hold down REST botton on climate control and it takes me to diagnostics. you can do this even if AC is off. then press the left AUTO button to get to sensor number 6 that is the coolant temperature. mine gets close to 100 C when the car warms up then comes down to around 89 C and stabilizes anywhere from 90 to 100 but I don't have my aux fan working right now so it just gets hotter and hotter if I sit in traffic too long. I'm expecting when I install my new fan it will run around 90-95 degrees.
I think it is impossible for your car to run at 82 C because the thermostat opens at 87. I used to read temp from the instrument cluster and even 89 degrees looks like 83. If your car runs at less than 87 C then your thermostat needs to be changed. Any temp lower than 87 C is going to wear your engine and your catalytic converter prematurely because the computer is trying to warm up the car to 87 or above by making the air fuel mixture rich in fuel which also causes your fuel consumption to go up as well. The ideal temperature for the car is 90 C but it is normal to see it close to even above 100 C in the summer time. only temperatures above 120 is considered critical by mercedes benz. If you look at your temp gauge and have your climate control in test mode on sensor #6 you'll notice that the temp gauge stays at 100 C (the line between 80 and 120) even when the sensor is reading 116 C that is because they don't want the driver to get distracted by the temp rise unless in gets over 120.
Of course personally I don't like seeing my engine operate in those ranges so I rev the engine to no more than 2000 rpm or drive around and try to get out of traffic jams ASAP to cool it down. Reving the engine a bit in stopped traffic actually does work by turning the radiator fan faster (for cars equipped with the belt driven fan)
hope this helps, let me know if you need clarification on any parts of this mess I just wrote.
btw: how much did the head gasket job cost you?
