If you get anything on the sensor its toast. Youll need to clean it or replace it.

Once i blew 2 in a week, but the parts guy told me that Mercedes knows they go bad and if you bring the car to service and tell them that your maf goes bad on you all the time they will replace it for free just make sure you dont have K&N inside the box.

I have over 10k miles on my new one, even with K&N installed. Although I agree with the above advice to swap in an OEM filter whenever returning to the dealer.

I have a 96 with the same engine as your 97 and I had to replace my MAF twice. Both times after having the engine cleaned. The first time the detail shop power wash my engine and got water down around the spark plugs. It misfired and ruined the MAF sensor. The detail shop paid for my repairs. Then a year later they did it again but they did not wash over the top of the engine. They did wash around the MAF. I went to drive it home and it had the same symptoms as the last time. I took it back and they paid to tow it to the dealer and again had to pay to replace the MAF. I have not had it detailed again and have not had any MAF issues again.

MAF cleaning.

I drove my 97 E320 for months with a bad MAF....finally removed it from the housing and put it in our ultrasonic cleaner . Worked great. Check engine light is out and has stayed out!Try it. A jeweller or dentist has an ultra sonic cleaner. Try the jeweller, unless you personally know a dentist.

Can someone please post their version of how to clean the MAF. I've heard of contact cleaner but this jewlery cleaner thing sounds a bit far fetched...

I didn't say years....but a few months. I would get a check engine light...download the P0170 code and reset the light. The car would drive for a couple of days then the check engine would come back on.....same code...reset...drive awhile before the "BEEP" sounded and the Check Engine light would again come on.....P0170. I just got sick of resetting it and the performance of the car hasn't changed and seems to be fine. Even passed a smog check..all I did was reset the light before I went to the station (knowing it would stay out for awhile) so the techy wouldn't see. It passed fine. Go figure..!!

It isn't jewelery cleaner...it's the ultra sonic machine that does it....
