Changing your oil yourself is just tooooooooo much? Only for a newfie.

The way I see it, paying someone else to change your oil sucks all the way around.

Cost ($): Mobil1 0W-40 costs $5 per qt/liter at WalMart = $40. Filter costs ~$15. Total: $65. Dealer oil change is at least $100 in my area.

Cost (time): Changing your own oil takes about a half-hour (45 minutes if you go slowly). Can you drive to the dealer, get your oil changed, and drive back in 30-45 minutes? My time is too valuable to be spent hanging out at the dealer.

Quality of work: Do you really trust someone else to not cut corners with your car? The dealers for a long time skimped by not using synthetic oil...this backfired and Mercedes had to replace engines. Do you really think the dealer will take the time to replace the ring seals on the oil filter assembly? How do you know they're using the appropriate fleece filter? If you do it yourself, you know it's done right.

things with and without wheels
Perhaps a sense of satisfaction of being self sufficient comes to mind.
Doing maintenance on your car allows you to inspect your vehicle and notice needed maintenance. If youre not mechanically inclined then by all means leave this stuff to the profesionals. It doesnt matter what you drive or how rich you are if you enjoy working on cars should that mean that you are cheap? hell no.

This is exactly why I do it myself. When I am done, there's no drops of oil dripped on anything, the drain plug doesnt leak, none of the under engine cover retainers are MISSING! all of the crankcase oil was drained, the filter housing cover is not crossthreaded,(oil filter tool part # 103-589-02-09-00 c class $29.74) and so on. The first and last oil change at mb I paid for was $165.00, and I found out at the cashier.

Before I found a reasonable tech, I considered doing it myself. The dealer charges upwards of $200 in my area. It's insulting.
The only reason I never did my own is the hassle of waste disposal.

..our weekly recycle pick up will take used oil if it's in a closed jug, no charge. I think the garbage place sell it to waste oil recyclers that pay 10-20 cents a gallon for it. Can you belive that, the dealer charges you $3 to "dispose ofit" and sells it anyway!

I have an ML and i got a letter a few years ago that there was a recall on all mercedes ML's pre 2000 that they have a warrenty up to 120,000 miles due to skimping out on mobil one oil. They lost a lawsuit.

notwithstanding all the previous justifications, I do it because

1) i can do it successfully. the $ saved goes towards large fries...
or illum sills, or tinted windows etc
2) i can guarantee that I won't put a ding or scratch on the
body and not tell the owner,
3) i can guarantee that I wont rip off the owner on the overhead costs,
4) I know that I wont go into the console or glove box and steal change
or the Ipod that was left there,
5) damn sure I wont leave grease slick on the upholstery,
6) my ears are tuned to any additional noises, rattles, oh-so-slight hesi-
tation, etc which might be emitted, whereas the dealer will not
7) I can do it quicker than taking it in to the dealer, arranging for alternate
transportation, picking it up
8) while under the hood, I acclimatize myself with other crucial
parts/locations, eg fuse box, dip stick, CPS, quick connection to
battery power, etc
9) during the oil change......it is safely under my control

also don't forget that most dealers hire a crew of neanderthals armed with dirty sponges to install complementary swirl marks in your paint (after charging you an arm and a leg for an oil change)

I seen no respond to make me say that any of you gentellmen got a point

first of all I do not do it at the dealer

in Canada we have fast lube shops such as Mr Lube and Jeffy Lube also we got small chains lube shops for less prices then the big ones

at such you see the oil change done in front of your eyes ... no greas on the seats you see the tech removing the skid plate you see everything .. any misstake also is done in front of you.. you start your car no one will touch your paint and if they do you see it on spot

also all o rings will be changed in front of you

you see it all

the oil at wal mart 5w40 or 10w30 synth sold at $8 per letter not $5 so the saving as I said $25 only

the way I see it ...benz is not a Honda

I don't know why I'm bothering to respond...

Your logic (as well as your spelling/grammar) completely escapes me. In what way is the quality of service at a chain lube shop (or anywhere for that matter) superior to changing your oil yourself? The lube shop's interests are contrary to your own. They want to charge you as much as they can and then spend as little time and money as possible servicing your car. This means cheaper parts and quicker vehicle turnover (i.e. less attention to detail).

And what is so special about changing the oil on a Mercedes as compared to changing the oil on a Honda? (I would think, if anything, you would take the POS Honda to the lube shop.)

The answer is not that the lube shop provides better service. You simply want to maintain your image with your neighbors. Heaven forbid they see you doing "lowly" work like changing your own oil! If they notice you laying on the ground under your car, they'll start spreading rumors that you can't afford that car with the three-pointed star after all! Do you really believe that because you drive a Mercedes, you should pay 36% more for an oil change (not including the cost of your time) so that your neighbors will have more respect for you? Quite a ridiculous affectation. But hey, it's your time and money!

(You'd get more sympathy from us if you said that you don't change your own oil because you live in a winter wasteland.)

Do you also call an electrician every time you need to change a lightbulb in your home. Of course not.

Changing your own oil is the easiest job to do and gives us great satisfaction knowing that we've spent a good half hour doing a job by ourselves. You know, get the hands dirty, work on the car, have a beer. It's a car, not brain surgery...

Do yourself a favor and run a better business bureau report on your local jiffy lube. You may think twice next time.

Here's my tactic... I ignore the burnt bulb long enough so that my wife gets fed up and changes it herself.

Some of us have to save money, to pay for things like raise in electricity bills.

When computer displays (post, web) are using normal font, the computer will not consume much power. However, large font displayed on the computer monitor causes the computer draw much more power, sometime 5 times as much. This could easily lead to $20-30 extra in monthly utility bills.

So we have to work on the car on our own, to save money for things like this.

Talking

Reasons why I change my own oil:
I don't care if its free
Oil consumption check : I check the oil level prior to draining it
Pan plug isn't stripped from over torque, won't leak, and a new washer is installed
Oil isn't spilled on engine
No leaks which I would have to check anyway
I get to inspect old oil
No missing cover bolts
No new scratches (especially obvious on black paint)
Leather steering wheel isn't greasy or gouged up
Oyster interior surfaces stay cleaner
It gets done on my schedule
When required I rotate the tires while the oil is draining
Takes less time for me to rotate tires and change the oil than it takes to go to McGeorge Mercedes
Yes I'm cheap I don't want to pay for the carelessness of someone else
