I would say it has to do with what the owner is used to doing. I like working on my cars and saving the few dollars here and there in the process. I'm not used to, nor do I hope to be used to spending big bucks just cause a dealer says that is what it costs.
For what it is worth, not all of us pay sticker price for these cars either. Take me for example, I paid less than 20% of original asking price for a used one.
