PLEASE READ - WTF, my spring fell off!!

Hi all,
So I'm driving along tonight in my 97 E320 arount 30 mph on a local road and I hear a big clunk boom bang in my left front wheel. The frigging spring broke off of the car at what looks to be the weld point... It literally broke off at the top of the spring where it's connected to the frame!!!!

Someone please tell me that falls into a spring perch recall that I've read about on this forum. I can't beleive that this could occur on a car of this quality.

Any info on similar experiences, remedies, costs, and what was included in the repair is most welcomed.

Thank you.

wholly crap..known problem!! I certainly hope there is a mandatory recall on that model's springs? poor guy could have had a serious accident w/ the spring falling out.

I'm curious, what year models is this a known problem with? I'm a recent new MB owner and am wondering if I should be concerned with this issue.

It's sad. I recently went under my car and checked the spring perches and the surrounding areas. Looks good to me.

I agree it is sad. The problem is mostly prevalent in cold weather cities where road salt deteriorates the underbody. If you drive in these harsh conditions I'd definitely be concerned.

What's more sad is MBUSA would probably deny this ever being a problem if it'd never turned into a recall -- much like the harmonic balancer recall that they denied was an issue up until the day they announced the recall.

Just curious smazur but what city has your Benz spent most of its life in?

One MUST Inspect The Spring Perch VERY CLOSE as Rust starts from the Inside!
Use a Pick to test for rust..

The car has spent it's life in the hub of the universe, Boston. It's made the drive from Boston to Vermont every winter weekend for 6 years.

That's hardly an excuse for a frame weld to fail...

This is a known problem for W-210, I had the same problem (see attached pics) and had them fixed free of charge by MB dealer (I have a '96 E320 with 67K miles when it was fixed in November 2005). Unfortunately MB did not have a recall , but decided fixing it case by case ... This is a serious safety problem and I do not understand why MB is not forced for a recall. MB is playing with people's death... and I will not give MB another chance... my next car WILL BE a Lexus , for sure

update since last posting is that it was towed to my local MB dealer (Chambers Motor Cars of Boston).
They inspected it and said that MB would cover the repair at no cost to me.

Picked it up last night, 1 week later, total bill was $0.00. They replaced both sides, even though just the drivers side failed.

Very happy.

it's not just a replace part, is it? was welding, etc. involved? did your invoice
show labor and itemization of work?

Labor was not itemized on the invoice.
I don't have it in front of me but I think it was 4 or 5 parts per side on the invoice. Cost code was listed as warranty repair.
