E320 Year 200 4Matic Transmission Problem.

Seem to be a huge problem with transmission and wonder if I can get any information. My car is experiencing a transmission problem, when it's at D, it drive only at first gear and not change to any gear. I can't shift the tranny to P or R from D. I have to shift it to N, let go the brake, then **** to R or P. Please let me know if you have any idea what's wrong with it.

Thanks in advance to all respond.

Mine has similar problem. It's in shop right now for trans rebuild. Dealer wants $6700. I found a Mercedes specialize shop that would do it for $3K.

Your problem sounds like a malfunctioning shift interlock.

If you have 96-99, it's the gear recognition switch (shift interlock solenoid), about $100 in part. If it's 2000-later, you have to replace the entire shifter unit, $400-500.

My mechanic told me that it would cost 3,500 for the whole new transmission. I live in NYC. Any suggestion?

Thanks
