Went down to a shop called motorwerks to get the B service (they are authorized for MB). He did the normal inspection and told me that I needed to get my ball joints replaced its a common problem with the E 55s. I left without getting them rep[laced and the car still rides no diffrent after 5 thousand miles but is that true that a MB has balljoint problems after only 50 thousand miles?

Our '02 wagon needed one at 44k miles and was covered by warranty.

I don't know, but that does sound a little early for that.

If that were my car, I'd weigh the cost of the fix versus the potential benefits.

I have been reading these threads for several months, and I have not seen any issues with the ball joints on any of the W210s.

You might try using the search feature for "ball joints" on this W210 forum, and see what you come up with.

Mercedes spec dictates no tolerance in ball joint play, so your tech may have seen some play - maybe 1mm or so. Once play gets up around 3-4mm it is dangerous. W210 ball joints aren't the greatest in the world to begin with and tend to need replacement at or before 60K. If the joint is going bad, you'll start to feel or hear 'pops' in the suspension when you turn into a curve or turn while backing in reverse.

My ball joints were replaced at 45k under the warranty by the dealer during the annual state inspection. They didn't do an alignment afterwards, and the two new front tires were ruined 2k miles later due to cupping. The tires were replaced under the tire warranty. Don't believe them if they tell you an alignment isn't needed.

I had to replace a ball joint at 50K. I replaced both fronts for 150.00 parts & installation. She rides great now. I didnt feel much when it was bad though because It had only a little play in it when I found it so I replaced fast.

Wood'sBenz;

A little off thread, but based on your reply I'd like to ask you a question. I have a '03 Mitsubishi Montero with approximately 40k miles. At as little as 23k miles, I could hear something poping up front, typically when backing out of my driveway. It has gotten louder and more pronounced. I just assumed that it had to something to do with the suspension, worn bushings or shocks. Does this sound like it might be a ball joint problem, and I would I go about determing the problem?

Thanks!

I had something similar on the right-hand side. Turned out to be a bad control arm link, which wasn't a killer to get fixed (in terms of $$). The noise was the metal parts jangling around because they were no longer attached to each other.
just a thought.
