outside temperature sensor

I have two questions: 1. I let my car sit for three weeks while on vacation and when I started it up the outside temperature guage was un-intelligable. Toggling between c and f, I was able to get it to finally give a number followed by half an F. It now goes to - 98 when it is about 80 degrees out and to -57 when it is about 60 degrees out. It moves very little in between. What gives?

2. Is the automatic airconditioner in any way tied to the outside temperature sensor? It seems that I am having some trouble getting high cooling when the out side guage reads -57 degrees. Any thoughts?--Thanks.

Sorry, I don't know the answer here, but I have a related question: Where is the outside temperature sensor located on our W210s? Thanks to any, and all, who respond.

The outside temperature sensor is on the driver's side next to the fog light. It looks like a black pencil tip sticking out of a little hole in the black plastic. Yes, the outside temperature is one of the inputs into the climate control system. I would check to see if the sensor is in place and not broken. Hitting a parking lot curb can pop the sensor out or break the black plastic panel. The panel and sensor can be easily replaced and aren't very expensive.

I went out and rubbed it and pulled it and pushed it and it did not move. But I started the car and the teperature guage worked perfectly. Maybe it was mad about not being used for three weeks...

The sensor snaps into the plastic panel quite snugly. It is easier to pop the panel loose and then snap the sensor out. Try to unplug and replug the sensor into the cable. The problem may only be corrosion in the plug.

It is the little black plastic insert in the bumper next to the driver's side fog light.
