P0170 Code - 1996 E320

P0170 Code - 1996 E320
The CEL came on the other day. I bought a little pocker scanner and the code I pulled is P0170. I looked it up and it means Fuel Trim Malfunction (Bank1). Anyone have a clue as to what that means? What part or sensor is failing? Thanks.

Last month I had the same code on my 96 E320 as well. Also bank 1. After doing some research online I decided that it was probably my MAF sensor and not a vacuum leak because the idle seemed okay. I bought some electronics cleaner at Fry's and took out my MAF sensor. I sprayed the inside of it down and let it dry overnight. The next day I installed the MAF sensor, reset the ECU, and the cell hasnt come on in over 6 weeks of driving. The most common issue with the code you are running is MAF. You might just need to clean it, but in some cases replacement is necessary. As I stated above, the code can also be from a vacuum leak. Good luck man, let us know how it works out for you. Thanks for the leads ... I'll clean the MAF and check for vacuum leaks tomorrow. The car idles and runs perfect ... can't imagine its a vacuum leak ... but I'll check all those darn little hoses that run around carrying vacuum. Checked out Autohauz ... they do indeed have great price on the Bosch MAF ... will keep that as a ready source in case I need a new MAF.
I've got good "no-residue" spray cleaner to clean that little plate inside the MAF and an air compressor .. so I'll be sure to give it a thorough cleaning.
Since you have a 96 E320 ... have you had the ASR malfunction message message come on? The other day I was driving around town ... (little place in Florida) and the ASR malfunction message splashed on to the instrument pod and the car went into limp-home mode ... engine kept running perfectly .. but it wouldn't answer the throttle. Then I "rebooted" the computer by turning the engine off/on and the message went out ... and the car was back to normal. I plugged in my code reader to see if there were any trouble codes left ... but there were no codes to read. Left me wondering whether the car is reliable enough to cross Alligator Alley ....

The ASR came on for me last year. It would be off and on sometimes when I would be driving. I took it to the dealer and had the speed sensors replaced at the rear axle. I can get the exact prices if you need it.
