Middle silencer
Hi again,
My middle silenced broke today and the inside is makeing a loud rattle. I cant by pass it because we have an illegal national car test in this country and my car is due to go in there in 10 days. Its a 1998 E240 with the w210 chassis. I cant seem to locate this as a non dealer part.Does anyone know any online store that will have this part and ship it to munster Ireland.

What part are you referring to? Perhaps what in the USA is called a harmonic balancer. It is a disk on the front of the engine that works to balance the crank shaft and over time can fail. Is that what you mean?

No thats not it,Here is how to find it. when you look at the exaust at the rear of the car there are two tail pipes connected to a rear exaust box,when you follow the pipe from the rear exaust box it connects to another middle box which appears to have mufflers inside it,I know this because ~I can hear a loud noise when I accelerate, like I knocked the mufflers out of the box when I went over that speed bump. Do you have any idea where I would get one of these?

I believe what you want is a called a resonator. (USA term) This should be available from most parts suppliers at least by special order.

Hi ,
I believe you are talking about the catalytic convertor , after a few years the inside gets rusted and falls apart inside , then you hear the noise , try to hit it with your hand and if you hear knocking inside it means you have to replace it.
its quite expensive but I would still go to the dealer and not buy after market

it is the cat converter in the middle of the exhaust. I have the same prob so i drilled a couple pilot holes in it a screwed in some 2" self tapping stainless screw and the rattling was cut in half until i can afford to get a new cats.
