Check Engine Light, Need Help

I went to the gas station to fill her up and dumb me forgot to put the cap back on until the CEL came on. Then i got out and inspected the car upon which i discovered that the gas tank cap was not put back. So i put it back on but the CEL won't go away. Do I need to go to the dealer to get this reset or will it just go away with time?

Give it some time. CELs may take up to 45 minutes of driving time to clear themselves. That, or perhaps a specific number of engine starts. I always let it go for awhile before getting concerned.

Couple of ways to get the CEL off.

1) If there is one in your area, go to Auto Zone and tell them you need to have an error code read. They will read it for free and (most of the time) clear it for you.

2) Disconnect the battery for a few hours. (make sure you have your radio code before hand).

Best of luck.
