i just put in a K&N filter, and its great. The car seems to be more responsive, and i didnt expect this to happen, but the car seems to have a deeper tone to it, and i love it. Has anybody elses car sounded more deep after K&N or am i just
Well this is my first kind of mod, and i did it myself, and it feels so good. I mean im only 17, so this is my first car, but is there any other mod like this that i can do by myslef, cause it feels so good?

sweet congrats and welcome to modding ;p you'll love it
sounds like exactly how you described, better sound, more responsive, plus it's easy to clean the filter every 12k miles or so

ML320, Looking for my S4
Yea, i noticed it too. The engine is a little torquier, but the engine noise is the same for me. You'll notice a diff after 50-100 miles as the ecu grows acustom to the filter.

K&N or Not?
I was told by my indie that I should only use origenal MB filters, that I should not use the K&N's, He said to try to stick with genuine MB parts....What are others opinion on using K&N filters????

on the "do not buy list"? wth you so harsh on the guy
there's nothing wrong with K&N filters, better flow than stock
the only thing to watch out for is when you take them out of the box and install first time, wipe off excess oil, as well as when you clean them every 10-12k miles and reoil them make sure you oil the correct side, since you don't want the oil to get on your MAF, in which case if do get it on the MAF you clean it with a qtip and should be fine, yes i know this is a long sentence lol, but who cares, in the long run it'll save you $ compared to paper filter from the dealer
and better sound/performance

thanx guys, and i think when he said "do not buy list" he meant not to buy my car since im 17, and i probably drive like a mad man, im guessing.
WEll i was wondering what other small mods that i can do, because im going to sell the cat beofre i go to college, so no point in spending big. What about spark plugs, what if i get platinum ones, will that improve performance? any other small mods? Well thanx in advance.

No, old guys mistakenly buy K&Ns too, but in any case they don't filter anything and your engine will ingest a lot of dirt and be damaged.
Also not good for MAF as previously noted.
Finally, scientific testing (BMW motorcycle) proves no change in airflow. In that test, tester found no difference beteen stock filter and NO filter. Why do think the most sophisticated car company in the world fits filters that strangles their engines? Doesn't compute.

2000 E430 sport
17 with a E420! Sweeet. When I was 17, I had a 89 honda CRX that I busted my **** for over two years to save the 6 grand I paid for it ! ( I was saving for college tuition too though!)
I have heard so many arguments over the k&N filter thing, I would not know who to believe!!!! I will prob. go with K&N on my E430 with my next change though.
And I have heard always stick with the Bosch OEM spark plugs.
I would not get crazy and mod an E420 too much since they were only produced one year, and kind of rare. Plus most performance mods are expensive. I heard the MB w210 is a work horse on reliability, might want to think about keeping it during college! I have a friend who got hers new (E320 I believe) right out of her residency in 96', two kids, and still drives it everyday with only routine maintance at an indy shop!- it is one of the reasons, since I really needed to go "used" this go around due to another child on the way, I went with the W210 model. Best - o - luck.

Wow I keep hearing people against the K&N filter and people supporting it. I am really confused now.
Thanks for scaring me you guys, now I going to replace my K&N filter with my old OEM filter (for now) and buy a brand new one tomorrow
. Ehh... wish there was a definite answer on this.

to who has said K&N doesn't filter anything it's just like having no filter-
well have you ever even seen a K&N after 10k miles, have you ever washed one to see how much dirt gets stuck in it? i'll take that as a no obviously
