Transmission shift delay
I recently purchased a 2001 w210. Love the car!
I know the five-speed auto has been described as one of the smoothest shifting out there. Just based on driving the car, I believe the computer shuts down the engine for a split second while the tranny shift which is part of why it shifts so smooth. Am I wrong? If I'm not is there any way to shorten or eliminate the engine shut down feature as I find it very annoying. BTW it is most noticeable under light throttle conditions.

I've noticed that too, although I think I notice it more under heavy throttle.
I think I remember reading somewhere that the ignition timing is retarded concomitantly with the shift to improve shift quality (and probably decrease wear on the clutch).

I have the exact same car. I notice this, and here it happens before the engine warms up and at lower revs (light throttle as you described and shifting from 1st to 2nd). I have never put the accelerator pedal to the floor, so don't know if I would notice it under those conditions, or not.

So some have noticed that and some haven't. Hmmm.
When my tranny shifts under light pedal it just feels like the throttle is being lifted. My natural response is to hit the pedal more. It almost sounds like a manual car where you can tell the pedal is being lifted between shifts. I'm just hoping theres a way to have the car shift crisp either by an adjustment or with aftermarket parts.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned here is that we both have what MB calls a "driver adaptive" transmission. There is a way to re-set that, because I've seen someone post the instructions on a thread here somewhere.
It will eventually adapt to your driving style, but I think it takes about 200 miles to do so. Did you just buy the car, less than about 200 miles ago? If so, maybe this is your answer(?)

I've thought about that adaptive programing. I shift manually quite a bit and I noticed the automatic shifts did get better about a week after I bought the car - that was 3,000 miles ago. I'd really like to drive another E55 to see if the shifting is normal.

After 3000 miles, I'd certainly think that your E55 has had plenty of time to adapt to your driving style. I have never heard of what effect, if any, manual shifting has on that. I'm with you though, it would be nice to just drive another similar vehicle and compare the two patterns.

W210 Gear engage from N to D and N to R delays 3-5 sec.
Hi Benz Users!! Anybody have faced this?
W210 Gear engage from N to D and N to R delays 3-5 sec. Otherwise, gear shifting during driving D mode is all fine gear 1 to 5 very smooth. Just that initial transmission engagement causing delay. Any idea?

I have no experience with the symptoms you have described. But I have a suggestion for you to try
as it is free: try resetting the adaptive shifting feature of the transmission. It may allow the transmission
to forget and reset your driving shifting habits and somehow relearn again. It 'reboots' the adaptive shifting
feature.
