removal of analog telephone

hello , new member here , i would like to find out how to remove the analog phone from my 98 e430.
do i need a special tool?
also is the wooden panel attached to the phone and if so how do i keep it functional without the phone ....
i am sure that in 98 the phone was optional and the wooden panel had to be attached to some sort of plastic bin used as a storage...?
thanks ....erick .

Yes, if you didn't get the phone, you got the storage bin behind the door. I don't know how to remove it offhand though.

Stupid analog phone!

rbrenton , i found the way to take the phone out ....simple, it involves removing the ashtray (the whole unit..)then pressing on a plastic clip on the bottom of the phone assembly...the whole thing slides out... then i disassemble the phone itself from the plastic frame that holds the wooden panel.
perfect ! no more anoying analog phone.....and i get to keep the wooden panel functional.
thanks ,Erick.

Just an addtion to removing the phone from the dash. I tried it after reading your post and mine's a little different.

On the 97 E420 slide the radio out enough to press on the clip of the phone. The phone will slide right out. Depress a few clips once the unit is out and it wil slide out of it's shell (so to speak). The wooden door is not impacted and the entire unit can simply be slide back in.... thanks for the post, I needed the room.

As an additional question along this line.... Once I removed the phone dialer pad behind the door, I have a large empty space without a tray. Can this be replaced?

I bought the plastic storage bin or 'cubby' off of ebay. I think I paid $25 bucks, and it actaully was the entire unit ... burlwood cover and storage compartment. I got lucky at that price .. most of the ones I have seen on ebay go for anywhere between $50 and $75. I took out my stereo and pressed down on the clip to release the old phone unit, and just slid my new storage unit right in. I don't know where you can purchase one, but just wait until one shows up on ebay.

That would be the same thing for my model. I had the plastic bin that would slide and lock in, but lost it. Mine is a '97 E420.. not sure how different this is by model. Thanks for the ebay advice, I've not been able to search the right words. I'll try cubby.
