68000k?

That is one outstanding transmission if it lasted you 68,000,000 miles.

Wait, something fishy's going on. You mean to say that up to this morning, the car drove fine... no noise from the tranny, no grinding, nothing. Then all of a sudden, you get a check engine light and the car doesn't shift right.

I don't know much about late-model MB transmissions, but I believe the shift points are electronically controlled. Therefore, if you have an issue with that part of the car's ECU/tranny module, it won't shift right... but not necessarily mean your tranny's shot. Take it to another person, or dealer for a second opinion.

If you're done with the car, donate it to me.

Anyway, good luck.

If you're in SoCal, I can help to hook you up w/ Mercedes that would do Trans rebuild for around $2K. He's Mercedes master mechanic, and just open up his own shop.

68,500,000 miles is a lot of miles, 4,500,000 is very expensive to fix and 2,500,000 is a VERY good price for a used MB with tranny problem.

My car's Tranny has 105K, and I was a little concerned. Knowing it can go for 68,500K will let me sleep well at night now.

My tranny went out at about 70,000 miles, it just is a commen problem. My mom was driving my car when it happened so she took it to a MB dealership and paid 6,000 dollars to have it fixed.

I guess it was under warranty.

Was your tranny replaced? overhauled? Did replace the fluid fixed the problem?

This is scary, MB tranny only lasted 30k miles.

This is another scary case. We probably should have a poll to find out how reliable MB tranny is.

It was rebuilt under warranty..new Torque Converter/Clutches/Valve body and front pump...The Clutch material looked like gold dust in the pan
Black Gold..

I Service the trans @30k intervals...as I Worked for MB and saw the results of a lifetime fluid.

Now MB Will Just Exchange the trans...

so here's the official ending.. let me rephrase that.. either of 2 things will happen. since i only have less than 2 weeks to get rid of this car before i move to LA.

1) donate the car to the American Red Cross and take the tax deduction.
(cuz fixing it will cost me $6500+)

2) the mechanic said he will contact a few wholesalers and possibly buy it from me for like 4-5K. not bad considering i just want to dump the damn thing at this point.

thanks for all your comments and shared experience. enjoy the holidays everyone!!

..........I am a bit suprised and worried about the content of this thread. I apparently wrongly assumed that the MB 5speed tranny was essentially bullet proof. For the tranny to be toasted at either 30000miles or 68000miles in a V6 car with 215HP is strange to me.

That is what I would probaly would get If I were to trade it in now but the tranny went out over 2 and half years ago and since then I have had no problems with my car except minor upkeep: brake jobs, motor mounts, fan belt tensior, oil changes. I almost sold my car about 6 months ago for $12K but deal fell thru. I also have added tons of upgrades. Plus I have a second car so I don't have to drive the Benz all the time like I did before.

Guys, the lesson here is that these transmissions require fluid changes despite what MB and BMW call "lifetime" fluid. To quote my former indie: "It's lifetime alright...lasts the life of the transmission". He recommended tranny fluid changes every 50K miles at a minimum. My E420 had around 130K miles when I sold it and the tranny shifted smoother than the day I got it. I think tranny fluid changes cost me about $200 at my indie, and it's not really a diffficult DIY.

I saw one in ebay for 2000 dollars for a E430
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/98-04...QQcmdZViewItem

.. You should check it out because is not uncommon to see them

Question.. What oil should be used? My car has 100k now and I don't feel like buying a tranny, specially with the conversion we are planning
