onboard computer problem, WTF
So when I went to take a look at this car, I was able to see the mileage remaining until service B on the FSS system.
Now pushing the up and down buttons on the steering wheel (with the display at overall mileage) does absolutely nothing.
I also can not see my miles remaining or oil level indicator.
It just toggles between miles since start, and miles since reset.
I know for a fact that I saw it during the test drive, and now nothing works.
How the hell could this turn to ****?
thanks for any help, pretty frustrated.

You are just flipping thru the modes on that one page, try the page buttons till you get to the correct one, then the mode buttons. They are the buttons on the same side of the wheel next to the mode buttons. You will find it.

No, it flat out doesn't work.
Heres what works and what doesn't.
1. Overall mileage and trip odometer. No FSS info, or oil level indicator
2. I get the Nav ready and telephone ready pages
3. I get the miles since start and miles since reset. No fuel range at all.
4. No Audio information whatsoever (I have nav if that matters)
Like I said, im 100% sure that I at least got the FSS information when I test drove the car. I never looked at the other stuff.
I have pushed every button there is to push, and im freaking pissed.
All this fancy crap, and none of it works.
I can't imagine that just some of these things don't work. its sort of strange, don't you think?
Anybody have any ideas? Im damn close to returning this thing and getting my audi back (3 day guarantee)

What year and model is it?? I have never heard of this before and its certainly not a common problem. Are you certain you had that info before?? Have you tried the page up and page down buttons?? All the buttons you need to do this are on the left side of the wheel.

2000 E430 4matic, with 48k miles.
Im 1000% certain that the FSS info was there. The rest I never delved into.
I have absolutely tried the page up and down buttons.
Im sorry if im coming off as pissy, but when your new acquisition turns into a POS within 500 miles of owning it, you get kinda mad.
I appreciate the help.

just a thought.... some parts of the menu are not seen until you come to a stop.
this prevents you from trying to monkey with stuff while you should be focusing
your attention on the road. see if that helps.
(what i just did)
while stopped
get display with odometer
press UP arrow (on upper/left cluster)
display shows # miles until next service
nuther thought: do you have/need owner's manual?

i know this might sound dumb...but just trying to help
some tips
i dont know if ur doing this with the key in or out of the ignition...start the engine and start browsing through the module
also
this may help refresh/reset the problem
1.turn the car off
2. pump the brake until it wont go down anymore...kepp pushing on it until it locks
3.hold the R button for 30 seconds...
turn car on...
hold r button again for 30 seconds..
it might help, try it when u get some time
good luck

I too have a '00 = and I can access all the menu functions while car is on, even the check oil level feature. If it is a feature that cannot be performed while car is running (such as checking oil level) it will tell me so.

Thanks for the help folks.
I bought the car at a BMW dealer that also has an MB dealer in its chain. They took it to the mb dealer to have it looked over. They never disclosed that the CD changer didn't work, or that the display was missing a ton of stuff.
When I test drove it, the FSS was there. As far as I know, all they did was look it over, which is why im so confused as to why its no longer there.
Raymond, if you mean the buttons next to the instrument cluster, on my car they control the brightness of the display.
All of my checking was done in the garage. I tried both engine on and off. I actually saw all this stuff in the owners manual, and tried to find it on the car, and viola, nothing.
MB>BMW, I'll try that.
Its a shame, because I really like the car otherwise. I know that you will run into some problems with any used car, but I didn't expect to have to put $4k into it within the first 500 miles.
Im sure the dealer would have a field day with the display.($$$$)

Well I tried mb>bmw's technique and still does nothing.
Is there anything that needs to be redone after you disconnect the battery?
The windows all work on the express function.
its so strange that just some of the things would not work.

go back to the dealer and demand that they fix it...that should be something simple for them...theyll hook it to the computer and just refresh the system....they better not charge u either(u just bought the car)....this isnt something u could possibly mess up...sounds like they sold it to u without checking it out better
i hope it works out...
they thing i told u to do was advised to me by a MB service tech-head foreman...and if that ddint help...u better go to the stealership
