WindShield Wipers on w211
The single-wiper--although it remained on E-class from 1986-2003, has proven not so successful. Lots of streaking complaints. In addition, a new "transmission" for one of them is > $1000.
One flaw I always found though was that the rubber wore down rather prematurely as compared to a regular two arm design. Another is the fact that it's relatively slow to keep the whole glass cleared.
It's still set a good 18 year production record, which I think it's not bat at all.
Not knowing any details about the W211 wiper design, I bet there must have been enough room to improve.
All the best!
Personally, I think there are a lot of advantages and disadvantages of having the one arm wiper. But the new two arm wiper doesn't bother me. But overall, if the disadvantages of the one arm wiper did not exist, I'd prefer the one arm wiper. It's just a much more unique feat of engineering. Mercedes finally got rid of it because it was actually more expensive than the two arm ones and it was less reliable. But because the reason why they chose the one arm design to begin with is to prevent the excess splatter that occurs on the two arm one (the second arm leaves a splatter where the first arm just covered).
