2011 E350 Sedan
Tried the "bang on the panel" method with the engine running and the radio on. Instantly got a big improvement in reception. But I get the impression that this probably isn't a permanent fix.
Looks like a poor connection. Could be a loose connection, a corroded connection, a bad solder joint, a cracked circuit board or ??
Anyone have any ideas for a permanent fix?
Thanks to all for the great info on this and other items.

I would check to see whether it's temporary before you try to access the C pillar. You can damage the (old, deteriorating) foam in the headliner by going into the C pillar. If the problem reappears, then you might need to go in again.

Try some Caig's DeOxit on the connectors. I have an aftermarket radio and when I did this to the antennae connector the difference was amazing.
