Fragged MAF??

So here's the story. I'm driving in the Antelope Valley today. This is a desolate desert with lots of dust, dirt, tumbleweeds, etc... Anyway, the wind is steady at 44mph with gusts up to 60mph. Needless to say, there is a great deal of dust, rocks and tumbleweeds flying around. I pass through a particularly thick cloud of dirt/dust/rocks and the check engine light comes on.

I try to accellerate and the engine is a dog, no torque.

When I get to work, I pull the air filter and shake out some small rocks and dust. There is now about half an inch of dirt in the bottom of the airbox. I take the car to the auto hobby shop and pull the filter. I used a air hose to blow out enough dust to cover a tabletop out of the filter. I pulled the top of the airbox and blew air over the MAF to knock off any excess dust. I plugged and covered the intake hose to the turbo and blew all of the dirt and debris out of the air box.

Everything seems clean now. The car is breathing well again and accellerates well once again, but the CEL is still on. Should I pick up a can of MAF cleaner and a new filter??

Okay I know the answer to the filter. Yes, I should buy a new filter, but is the MAF serviceable or a replacement only?

a new MAFS is around $260. You can try cleaning it. I can't imagine how the air filter would have permitted it to become dirty regardless how much dust there was. Take the filter lid off and look for dust tracks.

You can rinse the MAFS with IPA available at most drug stores. It's a fairly delicate device - - you may or may not have success.
