Big knocking/kick for the transmission after every shift

We have a 98 E320 with like 110k miles.

Every time it shift it feels like the next gear comes in really hard and the transmission is violently moved forward. It feels like in a manual car when you shift and let the clutch out fast while being like 1500 RPM over where they should be.

The Transmission at one point was making some noise and it turned out that a filter in the transmission was rattling, and i believe they did a whole transmission service (at an independent mechanic), i have read about the "special" fluid required, would the wrong fluid cause these violent shifts?

99 E320
since it is free, and only takes a few mins, try the ECU RESET trick...if not, just
to rule out the cheapest fix. but yeah, i felt similar jerk before, generally on
downshifting as the car slows down. MB replaced the whole tranny (under
Starmark so it was free). hard to diagnose until cause is determined. over the
Internet, it's more like process of elimination.

I don't know what an improper fluid will do to our transmissions, but I think it is good that you did at least have yours serviced. The myth of the lifetime ATF has been discussed at great length, and it seems to be just that, a myth.

If I were you, I'd try to find out what fluid was used for your service so you might be able to eliminate that as a possibility. I don't know if independant shops have access to the MB branded ATF, but some people have claimed that at least one of the Chrysler MOPAR fluids also meet the MB specifications.
