Sunroof PROBLEM!!

Hey all,
Newbi here....and i was hopoing u can help me with my sunroof problem.
for some reason the sunroof on my 99' E430 Sport will not open more then 4 inches. Then it stops, and it makes a horrible clicking sound....and if u hold it it keeps clicking, like something is breaking.
At that point it will not close back at all. So i have to manually close it with the tool provided.
The Irony is that the roof will go up and down, no problem, but it will not open all the way.
Can anyone help?????????????????????

I have decided that it is unsafe to open any windows or sunroof in a mercedes as they may not close . I just got the rear windows regulators replaced and now I see you guys having problems with the sunroof . I know there has to be some mechanics out there that can help you out with this, it seems to happen all the time. Lets get some replies from the pros................

both the window regulator, as well as the retractable roof have long established
reputations of premature failure. i know that the roof has new/improved parts
and seem to recall having read on various forums, a few suggestions on how to
retrofit/fix for improved longevity of the window regulator....but not clear enough
to find you any links right now.

strongly suggest searching this forum first. i'll check my notes

I had the same issue. It was a band (like a wire) that opens and closes the sunroof. They wera out twist and then the sunroof won't open. Mine was exactly the same where it wouldn't go back but only about 4 inches.

I had a body shop correct the problem. They took the old one out, put in a rebuilt one and then sent mine in for rebuilding.

The dealership wanted some outrageous amout of money!!!

The body shop did the re-build swap for $350 and gave me a 24 month warranty.

When the old sunroof came out I was shocked! It took someone who new exactly what they were doing to get that headliner and all the trim out, then the sunroof and all the drive assembly. There was no way I would have gotten throught that in a timely (non-frustrating) manner. And I'm very mechanically inclined. It was worth every penny to have them swap it out.

Not saying it can't be done, but for $350 swapped INCLUDING THE RE-BUILT SUNROOF - why would you even want to mess with it? I could have saved maybe $90 to do it myself. But, I can see where personal gratification in doing yourself would be nice too.

because I just stand the idea of someone at my dealer getting to do this for
$100+/hr. also, I like to know how things are put together and enjoy the
challenge. each person has a threshold for pain....and curiousity....and
satisfaction of fixing it themselves.
