Exclamation Oil pan leaking, help!!!

Ok guys, I had a small leak from the oil pan. I emptied the oil, dropped the pan and cleaned the crap out of it. I mean I cleaned it down to the metal to be safe. Next, I went over to the stealer and bought a tube of the silicone sealant and placed it all around the edges of the oil pan as instructed. As per one of the service techs at the dealer, I put the pan back on and let it sit for about 4 hours. I poured the oil in and drove it around the block but as soon as I pulled into the driveway, it started to leak again from a different spot. I bought another tube of the silicone and did the whole process over again letting it dry this time over night. I poured in the oil, drove it around again and now it's leaking again!!! Everytime I pulled the pan off with the new silicone, the silicone was still like mush and didn't seem to dry at all!

What the heck am I doing wrong or is this MB silicone garbage???!!! Those of you who know and can help please let me know! I also posted this over at the AMG forum so hopefully someone can give me some advice.

Thanks in advance!

-Jimmy

Oil pan leak ?.

Does your oil pan have a gasket ?. I saw my mechanic use silicon seal at both side of the oil pan gasket. The way you describe, there is no gasket, only silicon seal on your oil pan. Check out with your MB dealer to see whether they carry the gasket. Best luck.

Yeah but every mechanic that "knows what they are doing" has explained this simple procedure as I indicated above. I have changed many gaskets, used rtv and other silicones for these types of applications but I've never run into this problem. I am going to go down to the dealer and pick their brains again if anyone else can't offer a resolution.

First, are you certain its the pan that is leaking?? Could be something on the block like a sender of some sort and it appears to be coming from the pan. Second, did you clean BOTH surfaces, block and pan?? Did you use too much silicone or apply it unevenly?? Did you allow any time for the silicone to set up before installing the pan?? Did you damage the silicone bead while installing the pan?? As I said before let someone who knows how to do it take care of this. How many times do you want to try this??

Hey guys, leak was finally resolved today. I placed the pan on the ground downside up and lightly tapped on the edges all the way around to ensure it being flat. I proceeded to reseal the entire edge of the pan again after extensively cleaning it and the bottom where it meets the motor and so far so good. I just drove it around and so far not leak. Wish me luck and thanks for the good tips!

When the Lower oil pan is removed its a good idea to use a hammer to straighten the area around the holes on the oil pan as LOTS of techs over tighten the bolts and cause leaks ....Its also a good idea to replace the o/ring on the oil level sending unit at the pass side of the engine block

Is the repair procedure similar for the OM606 engine as it is for the E55 engine?

That's exactly what I did Mark and also replaced o-ring on the oil sending unit while I was at it. It's all good now, thanks!
