New noise

I drove my wifes 2000 E430 Sport last night. I noticed at idle in drive and after it was warmed up it has a slight vibration/rumble. It goes away when you take off. The car normally is very quiet at idle. It has 87k on it. Any ideas?

Check

your motor mounts,your cats.
In that order.
Mounts will go bad, leak, collapse, etc. and cause symptoms such as that.
Cats or cat gone bad will rumble or rattle.Pop the hood, listen for the sound or look for the vibration. With the car in the driveway, safely stand off to the side while your wife with her left foot on the brake gently revs the engine in drive.Just enough to torque the engine up the power band idle and repeat ,do you see the engine lifting up abnormally?mounts........Can also be inspected by jacking up the car at the proper jacking points and with jack stands for safety crawl under and inspect them.
Diy over on www.benzworld.org w210 section
mounts at www.autohausaz.com
cats ask for supplier options in another post.

Well ohlord, you were correct. I took my car in the the dealer in Atlanta. They diagnosed it as a bad cat on the drivers side. Thet other one(s) were still good. The cat was covered by an emmissions warranty 8/80 but just barely. My car is a 2000 delivered in January with 79.2k on it now. I drove it home and it was still making the same noise. I took it back and the dealer and they suspected the other cat laid down as well. They did a test and it was good. The techs took it back in and found I had two collapsed motor mounts a missing gromment from the shifter(?) and a bent heat shield. Now my wallet is 700 dollars lighter but the car is a quiet as a Caddy now.

Wish

you would have checked back before they did the mounts $55.90 each from autohausaz.com and a few hours diy.
but you are coming up on plugs so if we can twist your arm at 3bucks a plug times 16 and a few tools and a sat. morning we will put you back in the plus column again
Makes my day when I go 2 for 2 ! and lucky for you that you got in under the wire"(whew)on the cat.Dealer gets well over 1000 bucks or something that outlandish if they stick you with replacement.
universal oem cats only spliced in are 50 bucks should the other one fail out of warranty.
Glad it all worked out
ohlord
Gotta love those dealer shops, sent you off down the road with the same problem, charged the home office for a bad cat(who knows if it was bad if you had the same problem upon leaving?)And then they get to charge you for the mounts, that they should have checked the first time!
Those techs crack me up
