Inspect the serp belt
it may or should have been done at one of the scheduled maint intervals if the po had the car serviced properly.
The w210 has a timing chain and if the correct oil and intervals have been followed, the oil lube on the chain will keep it in nice shape for over 150,000 miles. You are coming up on the 100,000 mile plug change, easy diy and at 85000 miles it is time to change the trans fluid and filter mb fluid only.DIY on

1999 you have a drain for the converter so all the fluid can be drained out and replaced.
Invest in the 94169 code scanner at harborfreighttools or at one of their stores if you have one nearby it is only 39 bucks online and the store will meet its internet price if you ask.The scanner will read your codes and clear them, plus read I/M readiness for smog tests and is worth its weight in gold if it saves you one trip to the shop to find out why the check engine light is on.
Last but not least, always post a concern or problem here before running off to the dealer or shop, almost anything you encounter has been dealt with, seen, fixed,or solved,so check here first before the shop gets you.
