Self Ownage: Where the #$%@#$% did it go?

I was replacing the lamp in my passenger side headlight and of course, I was in a hurry and couldn't be bothered to undo the air cleaner box to make room. I unclipped the headlight backing cover and removed the burned out bulb.

As I was explaining to my son that you really shouldn't touch the glass of the new bulb to due oil hot spots I tried to wrangle the darned thing into a space that really wasn't big enough for the bulb and my hand.

I dropped the *** thing.

Rattle rattle thunk............

Damn, grab the flashlight from the boy (yes, it was dark and I was doing it in the driveway to the light of a single flashlight). I can't find it in the engine bay and its not on the driveway.

Just at that moment my wife appears and asks me if I am ready to go. I grab the second bulb (always buy two!) pop the aircleaner cover out of the way reassemble everything and off we go.

Now the question.

Where the hell did it go and is it still there?

the plastic pan is directly below the radiator and should be a snap. consists
of half dozen small bolts...about 10mm or smaller. the only other recess I
can think of is that it is caught in the shelf just below the headlight ....right
about where horn #2 is located. since you have pre-facelift, removal of the
headlight is quick and easy.

Or maybe it escaped and ran away to the underground bulb world, where it will plot against you for several years until the timing is just right.

It will be in the belly tray the next time you drop it. Of course the bulb will be no good due to the filament breaking from all the vibration.

Yep definitely in the belly tray...

Of course leave it to a Soldier to buy two parts when he needs only one because he knows he will do something to mess up the first time. If it were me (a marine) I would have jury rigged an incredibly elaborate Rube Goldberg-esque contraption to prevent myself from dropping the bulb. It would have included, but not have been limited to, 100 Mph tape, 550 cord, and laminated 5/25000 maps with a GPS PLUGR. Thus preventing me from having to buy a second bulb. As for money spent, well I already had the materials from previous encounters.

Just kidding but yes it will be in the belly pan and definitely no good.

Are you going to be in Baltimore this year for the game? Maybe Army can start bringing itself back from the dead. I mean really, 2 games won against Navy in the past decade?

GO Navy! Beat Army!

GO Navy! Roll Over to Army!
This behavior is not limited to Soldiers, it is inherrent to all Government employees. This is exactly why the DOD has the Marine Corps, Why waste good Soldiers when you can toss the Marines in test out whether MI was right about the AO being safe?

I think the Midshipmen will contribute to the Army fight song this year "And the Army goes rolling along" on this embarrassing losing streak to Navy.

I'll take a pity win this year if Navy has it in them. That being said, I'm going to sit at home and watch the debacle from the comfort of my own crying room, errr, TV room.

You would think Navy would be the worst football team on the planet. Think about it. They can't practice on a boat!

Practicing sideline passes on the deck of an Aircraft carrier makes for great footwork discipline. How much of that can you do in a Tank, or a minefield?

Of no help to you, but on subject...

Two weekends ago I did an SCCA road race in a friend's car. It's a '74 SAAB 99EMS and it was its first time on track in 7yrs (he got it free this year). We barely got it past the technical inspection (the cage and seat were a bit unsafe) and I made it through qualifying without anything breaking, big miracle.

Well, after qualifying, I'm looking under the car and see an alternator belt hanging down. I also verify there is one attached correctly.

Me: WTH is THIS??
Friend: Oh, I dropped that and thought it fell all the way to the floor.
Me:
Oh, I also found a Snap On socket attached to my a/c compressor bolt, when I bought my E320.

Dropped bulb

Playing around with my circuits this am and I decided for fun to take an old H7 bulb that was replaced when I converted to the 65 watt rally bulbs from danielsternlighting and drop it down the area in question.
Belly pan first drop, belly pan and bounced out that little hole directly below the high beam location second drop, belly pan over by the access cover for the fog lamp last drop.So maybe you can open that up and feel around for the bulb.

I looked this morning and couldn't see the thing at all. This weekend I'll go digging for real. I still feel like an idiot.

Very true. Hence the old saying "We make something Marine Proof and then they make a dumber Marine." Also the reason why Claymore Mines are stamped in big bold letters "THIS SIDE TOWARDS ENEMY."
And I quote a young Private First Class...

"Hey Cap'n! Does that mean we face it so we can read it?"

Yes PFC. Just so you can read it.

Best of luck this year. I'll be sore on Sunday from all the pushups in the endzone! Have a beer for me!

And by the way, I played tackle football on the deck of the USS Bonhomme Richard and have the scars to prove it. They weren't kidding when they named that paint "No skid." Makes you run real fast so you don't get caught.

14 years in the Army taught me that nothing is ever "Joe proof". There's always a dumber Joe out there.

I had a left hand firer catch hot brass in his chin strap and got burned. When I asked him where his brass deflector was, he showed me that he always put it on top of his right arm "cause thats where they always land".

I showed him that if he put the stupid thing on his rifle where it belonged, it wouldn't hit his arm OR his face.

Knucklehead.

for the non military inclined thats not going to make a lot of sense, sorry.

As for the Army Navy Game, its going to be fun regardless. I look forward to it every year.
