1997 E320 (silver/black)
Here's how I fixed mine ...

there is a purge valve for the gasoline vapors trapped in the tank which sucks them into the intake of the car. Take off the hose on the back side ehre the vacuum line comes from the rear of the car and put a good squirt of WD40 into the guts of the valve. Purge valve is on the driver side over the wheel well under the hood mounted in a rubber holder.
