how does the turn signal system work?

my rear signals are out and I'm trying to determine the problem. a very small voltage is measured at the rear turn signal lamp, less than .5v's but it does fluctuate with the signal (on/off/on/off).

front signals work fine-just no back signals (L or R). Where does the signal (flashing) come from? where is the split for front nad rear? Is a 'flasher' unit used as is in older vehicles? I'm looking for the driers side SAM, but don't know if the box in the engine compartment next to the databus (drivers side next to firewall) is the control box.

can anyone help?

anyone, anyone?

Here is what I've gleaned so far from the MB WIS. the turn signal system runs off the CAN wiring system-which I do not fully understand. I've been trying to locate the driver side signal actuation module (SAM) and the picture provided doesn't look what is in my car. Is the SAM in the black box next to the cruise servo? I expected to see some relays, but there are none.

so does anyone know about how the MB signals work? both rear's are not receiving a signal whereas the front's work fine...it's got me perplexed

well, the rear turn signals are working now, but the electric seats, sunroof (close feature) and door activated interior lights don't work!
