Transmission fluid ATF change interval?

My '00 E320 Estate has 40K miles on it, but I expect it has the original ATF in it. I know that we need to be VERY careful with these trannies, so I called my mechanic about changing it. He says it's too early, and I should wait 'till 60K.

But I think it's been in there for 8 years! Does ATF have a shelf life or is it all about miles? What advice have you guys been given?

Thanks in advance.
