Reliability of a 2001 E320?

Hey guys, I am on the market to purchase a 01 E320. Can you please give me some feedback on the overall experience with this particular model. Are there common flaws or defects I should watch out for? Thanx for any feedback....

My experience wasn't too good, but many other seem to like them.

I haven't had much trouble with my E320. Just had to bring it in 2 times to get relays replaced (BAS,ESP sensor relay). No serious problems at all. Love the car.

It seems like this particular model has electrical problems,
I talk to a couple of people who had trouble with power seats, sensors and remote keys.
Are these common probs or rather one out of 1000 basis?
At this point, I am trying to decide whether to get a E320 or a GS300....What do you guys think?

yes, electrical/electronic problems seem to be the most common.

Have you driven the 2 cars yet? If so, you should already know which car to get. -- E320 --

i havent driven the E class yet. I rode in one when I was in Belgium, but it was a taxi cab... That doesnt count I guess...
I test drove a GS300 the other day, it seems smooth and quite, with a good pick up from the light. But I cant get over the looks of the E-class....
I definetly plan on test driving one over this weekend. I am sure it will be as smooth or maybe even smoother than GS.
Its just, I am not sure of the reliability of this car. I dont want it to cost me an arm an a leg, once the warranty expires.....
I also heard that the scheduled maintance on a MB is complimentary for 4 years. Does that apply to the used cars or a non-original owner as well?

Reliability

My 2001 E320 has had nothing more than the batteries replaced in both remote controls.

I have a 2001 E-320. 25,000 trouble free miles. Very pleased with the car. I have only replaced batteries for the remote key control.

My 01 E320 4Matic has to date been one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned. Only one unscheduled dealer visit in over 2 years, to replace the fuel tank sensor. Its also a delight to drive and very comfortable. Buy it, you will love it!!!!

I also was looking at the GS300... and like me, once you ride in the E320, the GS won't be an option any more. Yes, 2000+ models all have 4 yr/50k free maintenance. Even if you buy it second hand from a private owner, auction or dealer. The way MB described it to me is they warranty the car... not the owner. So buy the car and if you have trouble, bring it in to any MB dealer and drop it off. That's it. No hastle. As for the end of the warranty period, buy the extended warranty if you can. I am in the market for an extended warranty and it's cheaper to buy early on. I don't know if you are buying from a MB dealer but if you do, get their MB warranty vs a third party company.

Thanx guys, I'll get to see for myself tomorrow what all the fuss is about....
I plan on getting it from a private owner rather than dealer, it's at least 5 grand cheaper.
I noticed a lot of them don't have HID's. You guys know if the aftermarket kits are available?

There are aftermarket kits to upgrade to HID's but it depends on who you ask if it's worth the upgrade. Some folks have minor glitches (error messages) after installation due to the electrical draw the HID's need upon startup. Others say no problems at all. According to my MB dealer, when they install HID's, they do more to the electrical system to compensate for the HID's current draw. So it didn't sound like it was a plug and play sort of deal. For that reason alone, I'm holding off on HID's.

It probably depends one which brand you go with. I found this kit:
http://autolamps-online.com/products/h7kit.htm

It works with 9-16v electrical current, and is 35w vs. 55-60w stock.
