1997 E320 Engine running rough
I was on the highway and had a little hesitation as I was accelerating to change lane and my CHECK ENGINE - Engine Electronics light came on.
In the past a similar symptoms was found to be a bad spark plug so I changed the plugs again but I am having same problem
I seem to be getting a fuel smell in the exhaust and When I took the gas cap off it was wet with gas
My low fuel light was flashing 60 days ago
The code P455
Evaporator Emission Control System Leak Large
I tighten gas cap and it seem to be fine
Any Ideas

Get a new gas cap
a real one not a cheap aftermarket.
autohausaz.com
check all fuel lines and evap system lines for wear.
on a l6 motor I don't know if you have a purge valve like on the v6 but you can if you have one clean it and check that it is operating.
lastly don't top off your tank when you fill it.that can trigger the p0455 code and also chance to ruin your charcoal evap canister and create the fuel smell.
if you can't fix it or find it with the above suggestions then get it to a shop that can locate the leak. Before it causes more problems, like a fried cat
You can try flipping the gasket in the cap,in the meantime while you wait for the new gas cap to arrive or get one at the dealer.

This problem is new
The fuel flashing light was fixed with tightening the gas cap
This new issue is check engine - Engine electronics with a rough iddle
Will you get an engine electronics code with a fuel system issue?

Check
engine lights are usually emissions related issues, they are all affected by fuel, spark or air. Some cause the problems you state and others you hardly notice at all. What is the code?Just give the current code and the current symptoms and let's see what can be figured out.

Swap a wire
from the first cylinder with #2 and see if the problem moves to #1.
first check that the wire is firmly on the plug.
OEM wires?they should last a long long time.
Got a mechanics stethoscope?listen to the injector on that cylinder does it tic along like the others?
last run a can of seafoam injector cleaner through the gas and see if that cleans up a dirty nozzle.
keep us posted.
it most likely is something simple once you track it down

Yes OEM Wires
Yes
I have OEM wires
Where do I buy seafoam?
I will swap the wires and clear the code
Then check it again
Unfortunately I don't have the diagnostic computer so this is multiple trip to Autozone
Lost my Mechanic stethoscope in a move

Where are
you located?
harbor freight tools scanner 94169 they will meet their internet price of 39 bucks if you take them a copy.
handy scanner, works, clears ,reads ,reads i/m readiness status and if it saves several trips to autozone pays for itself, never mind if it saves you a trip to the shop or the dealer
seafoam at autozone or schucks.
mechanics steth on sale at harbor freight.

Someone may
correct me,cuz i don't know it allbut your system has 3 coils so with the firing order they fire and then charge up for the next plug in the firing order ,you would have 2 cylinders showing a misfire and 2 codes. So i think it is the wire to #2 or the plug.Swap a wire with another plug and check it.Then if not the solution swap a plug.If not that then the injector may be dirty.that's how I figure it.

Three Codes
The guy at autozone said there were three codes but what did not make sense is he said they were all P0302
I thought I also saw P0300
The hard copy readout says
Cylinder Misfire detected - Cylinder number 2
Explanation
The powertrain control module monitors the cranckshaft speed and has detected a misfire condition
Probable cause
1. Ingnition system fault-spark plug (s) ignition wires,coil
2. Vacum Leak
3. Injector Fault
4. High - Low fuel presure
I will trouble shoot as you suggested

Everytime my "Check Engine Electronics" light comes on and it starts running like doh-doh its always a coil. How do I know this. I have already bought 6 out of the 8. I buy them one at a time as they fail.......... The bright side, I only have to buy 2 more...........
PS: My car has 164,000 miles. All of them have failed in the last 6,000+/- miles.
Find out which one it is, like at AutoZone. Put it in with a new spark plug, takes about 25 minutes once you have done a few of them like I have, then drive the car about 15 miles. The code will clear itself by a self test of the computer.

Let me cover all the bases
I have chaged the plugs to Boch Platinum II
I have replaced the wires with Boch OEM
I put in the sea foam 16 ounce to 16 gallons of gas and drove 5 miles (don't know how many miles I should drive before I should expect a difference)
Please suggest how I should drive and for how long
The car is idling at 8 RPM I forget what the norm should be
I don't think this has anything to do with my problem but you never iknow so I will throw it out there
Last thing the day before I had this problem and code show up my battery went completely dead from leaving an interior light on
I tried to jump it but it was completely dead - no lights in the car no click when I turned the key
I had Mercedes come out and put an OEM battery in the car and it started up fine

you no this is interesting i have the same problem, my mechanic has no explanation for me except that the cylinder misfires on my 1996 e320 if i push it hard, he said fuel injection system and i think hes right because i have had some trouble starting it lately, where it cranks, sparks but doesnt turn on!

One more item
I have a small bare spot on one of the wires going to the ignition coil.
It is not touching metal but I am sure it could
The tape on it seems to be cloth
With the wire being directly on the motor I am sure it is hot and just any electrical tape won't do
What sould I use to cover bare spot
How big a deal is it to change these wires?
I thought I read somewhere it was a big deal

Running Great again
Hopefully this helps someone out there
I was on the highway changing lanes when I got a slight hesitation, the Check Engine light came on with Engine Electronics and then the engine started running rough
This occurred once before it I found it to be a spark plug so I changed the plugs again
I went to autozone and the code was P0302 spark # 2 misfire
Plugs were not the problem so I put new wires in but the problem persist
I then added Sea Foam to the tank to see if I had a clogged injector but no positive results
I finally went to the stealer and got crucified for an ignition coil but I needed it ASAP
Changed the coil and engine runs like new
Note I did not see two codes or a report of two misfires – odd being that the coil is used for two plugs
I saw that one other member had mention the same situation happened to him so I took a chance and I am up and running again
Thank to everyone for the input
I hope this helps someone else as well
