2001 E55 Purchase?

Been away from Mercedes since my 300SD/240D, Great cars! I'm inches away from buying a 2001 E55 with 108K on it. One owner MB serviced since day one. I've heard this car is pretty bulletproof, not one with may problems. My thinking is the cars engine is overbuilt and if it was used for the daily commute 108K is nothing for mileage. I also have stayed away in the past becuase of electrical issues, does this car have those concerns.

Can anyone out there give me some insight on this car.

Your help would be appreciated!

Thanks-Cos

Mercedes-Benz E320 Aventgarde year 2000, Diesel
I have a E320 S210 from year 2000 with 180000 km on the clock, and I am extremly happy with it.

There have only been a very few major issues with this model. The biggest issue, I have to say, have by far been rust.

The one I got, had no rust on it whatsoever, but all 4 doors, both the front and rear clap had been changed under garantee, before i bought it.

Of minor issues (but sometimes costly), I have seen the SRS seat sensor in the passenger side go defective (cost me 450£ at a MB dealer for parts and labour), and sometimes the ABS/ESP/BAS sensor says there is a defect (probably just the sensor, and is fixed by turning off and on the engine).

As soon as I bought mine, the first thing i did was 1) had it checked by a MB mechanic 2) gave it Dinitrol.

Fortunately, the one i bought didnt have any rust whatsoever - but do know, this was a big problem on alot of the W210's, but not all.

Other then that, I think this is the best car there is out there. I mean, I get 200HK's, lots of space (mine is teh wagon), get 14km/l on average and 12km/l when i drive it hard and at 160km/h.

It's stable, rock solid, and dont have many of the issues many other cars have (shaking chassis, unstable braking, shaking steering wheel and so forth).

Hvae a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W210

Its a great description of the car, and look at the Common Issues section if you are concerned about the major problems there have been. This sums it up pretty well.

Good luck.

The W210 E55 is probably one of the most reliable high-performance car out there. Most of the earlies problem seen on the early W210 (harmonic balancer, early 722.6 trans, electrical glitch...) were sorted out by year 2000-later. The only crappy part that remain the same (and will break again !!) was the window regulator

As long as the car was properly maintained, and previous owner did not take the car to race track often, 100K should be nothing on these cars.

2001 e55
Just bought an 01 e55

I paid $12,600 for the car with 102k on it from the Los Angeles area. Had a mechanic do a pre-sale inspection and the only issue he could find is that it will need front and rear brakes in between 5000 and 10,000 miles. Black with black leather. No Nav. Cold weather package, rear window shade. All in all, a very nice car.

I had been watching them for a while and most with over 100k seem to be going for somewhere around $15,000 and $16,000.

Wow - great deal on what sounds like a great car. I had two of them - a 1999 and a 2001. Never any issues with either one, but sold them both at about 73k. I never had rust issues, but I am from North Carolina, so that's not an issue around here. Typically what I have noticed on higher mileage E55 is that the Black Birdseye Maple wood will fade to a strange colored brown after exposed to the elements, and the instrument clusters are bad to lose pixels on the 2000+ models. I luckily didn't have those problems with mine, nor did I have any mechanical issues. Would definitely own another one.
