Brought my E320 in for Tranmission Fluid and O ring leak repair today at a local independent Mercedes specialist. He went through the car in detail with me and said it was in excellent shape at 86k miles. The things he recommended were:

Lower Ball Joints
Lower Control Arm Bushings
Valve Cover Gaskets
Alignment
Transmission Cooling Line
Spark Plugs

Total Price $1200

Does this sound excessive?

Yes

but if you are not a diy person fair.
Plugs are due at 100 k and if you do them yourself 28 bucks for the 17mm boot tool from me and 2.69 a plug ngk7090 times 12 from any auto store.A socket wrench some torx bits for 7 bucks a set and a sat morning for you.Easy.
Valve cover gaskets, why? They are hardly ever an issue on the m112 and m113 engines.Trans line is it leaking?
most indie shops dont have the proper alignment equip so you might want to check.Do the tires show abnormal wear on the inside or outside?
Will they let you purchase your own parts and they install? They may be wanting to do the alingn if they do the suspension.
www.autohausaz.com for the parts.

Plugs - he didnt mention doing the plugs but I recommended that if he was gonna put the valve cover gaskets, the plugs would be easy so he added that for about $200

Valve cover gasket - was leaking on the passenger side. He showed me that and I saw a small amt of oil from underneath. I'm never had as much as a drop on my garage floor and I never need to add oil

Trans line was seeping. He said they can blow off. Hmmm, not likely. I dont thing thats high pressure.

Tires seem to wear ok. I bought new tires 20k ago and they still look new. The last set still had tread but got really loud. These new tires have gotten a little louder then they were new.

Doesnt like you to purchase parts. Claims his markup is 20%

Alignment was due to the suspension work.

The car tracks, steers and rides like new. I dont think I'll do anything right now. Maybe I'll try to torq the valve cover. I'd bet its just loose.
