I've figured it out, well part of it!
I figured out what that initial resistance is due to. It is this white piece of plastic connected to the brake pedal with an electric wire connected to it.
It is figure 14 in the following picture:<IMG SRC=http://www.detali.ru/cat/MB/B29015000078.0291.gif>
Now, I am contemplating removing this, but I do not know what it does. One thing is for sure, it does not activate the brake lights. My guess is that it is the culprit responsible for the "release the brake before you remove the key" feature.
Does anybody have any experience with this white piece? Will I encounter any problems if I remove it?
I have no 1/2in. of lag or any stiffness of the brake problem.SS brake lines will firm up the pedal even more and make the brakes more responsive.

Don't get 19's
With the lever pressed down all the way, braking is superb. However, the key will not release from the ignition until the lever is reset to its initial position. The engineers are clearly at fault here. Remove the knee bolster and look under the dash and you will immediately recognize what I am referring to here.
I am nitpicky when it comes to brakes and handling as such I am probably the only person that has an issue with this. I will probably figure out a way to remove the lever, killing two birds with one stone.
1) no more initial backpressure from the lever
2) do not have to release brake to remove key
