Buying info on 99 e320 4matic
A client of mine has offered to sell me a 99 e320 4matic. His elderly mother bought it new and the car has 25k miles on it. It has been kept in a garage and is in really great condition. What are the maintenance pitfalls with this car? I am not mechanically minded. Also, what is a fair price? Thanks.

You
bought it already?
A nice deal would be in the $9500 range, the problems are that driven that few miles you may have catalytic issues that will cost you money in the future and it is past the 8year warranty on them.
Inspect, inspect, inspect.Make sure all recall work has been done -call the dealer-
9years old even with 25k miles all the fluids need to be changed and the spark plugs. So if you are not the diy type it is going to cost you about$800 to do all of the services at a shop.
They are great cars just don't kid yourself about the potential cost of ownership. If you can't diy or won't diy your own maintenance and repairs don't be shocked at how much the shops or dealers charge to keep it tip top shape.
Make www.autohausaz.com your buddy and you should have no worries.

make sure recall harmonic balancer was done if that was one of the chassis numbers affected.
get it inspected even if it only has 25k miles things can fail just from age and lack of use.

Sounds like a cream puff to me. You just don't find grandmas car everyday.
Lets see, super market 2 mile, beauty parlor 1 mile, bingo and church 2 miles grandchildren never in the car, PRICELESS.
As ohlord stated $9500 would be a nice deal. I would be interested in the "duty cycle" was the car used at least weekly or has it been sitting for the last five years?
Records are important too, get all the records the owner has and a carfax and VIM from Mercedes.
Make the best deal you can in these recessionary times.

I am not mechanically inclined, but many short trips are actually stressful to the engine. In either case, get the car. Low mileage once you get all the maintenance done you are going to enjoy a heck of a deal.
