200,000 Miles - What grade oil?

I just put 200,000 miles on my 97 E 320. I have been using 15/40 grade, but some say 20/50 grade is better. What is the pupular concensus?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'd just continue using the same grade.

Hi, night. Did you ever review the oil recommendations made by the vehicle mfr? What does the Owner's Manual show?

The only time...

you should go to a heavier oil is if the car us burning oil with the current weight.

If oil consumption is not an issue, then keep on with your current grade.

Personally, using a synthetic blend, I change mine at around 4-5K on the 7.5K service interval as well.

Maybe it's time to review contemporary info and graduate to current mfr recommendations:

You can review a list of approved 229.xx oils for your car over at Wolfgang's site. You might be surprised and pick up something in terms of fuel economy.

Good response guys. I think I will stick to the one I am currently using. That chart was quite useful. I was using synthetic Mobil 1 - 0/40 until I developed a head gasket leak (not strange for that engine). I switched to the heavier conventional grade hoping it would help but did not work. I got the head gasket repaired, but just kept on using 10/40. So far so good, still dry.

i would keep on using dino oil if i was you. 10w40 is fine, as long as you change it every 3-5k miles.

I recently made this page on oil changes which links to wolfgang's site. I'd appreciate any feedback on the text as I'm not a pro... just tried to summarize other posts and pages. Should I add "stick to what you're using if it works" to info about oil type?

Has anyone here used a fluid evacuator on the w210?

warm engine slightly and suck away made my own for $8 and two anti freeze jugs just changed the thick tube that comes on the harbor freight tools suction pump to a line that fits into the dipstick tube cut the end at a 45degree angle and get it done.A few pumps to get it started is all it takes.

Sweet! Do you have a harbor item number, OhLord? They had a "oil change pump" or something on the website but I couldn't get it in the store I went to, and I didn't know what else they had in stock that would work (and I'm sure that something would have).

Thanks! The clone is what I tried to buy in the store but I guess it's online/phone order. Even brought my computer in to show it to them on the site. But I do like the smaller pump solution you came up with. Seems pretty compact and convenient.

Thanks again -- I'm going to buy one or the other!

Oil filter

Hello Ohlord,
I have read a few of your post regarding fluid changes, eng, tranny.
I have see you mention Fleece filter. Is this the vendor?
Anyhow, I have a 97 E300D.
My last diesel was a Audi A6 1.9 TDi , I would get 850 miles on a tank of gas. I was living in Europe. They had two service plans, one for normal drivers and one for long commuters. I had the long comuter plan. The oil change freq was flexible. As you came in for maintenance, they would check the data in your computer, (driving style, ect.) The upper limit on the oil change was 25K miles. To me the weakest link in the oil life is not the 20$ a quart oil, but the filter.
I bring my OEM oil filter, to wallmart, buy my 10/40 moible 1 there and have them change it for 18 dollars labor. With my OEM filter, I change it at 5k.
I want to do the long interval, but I don't think the 97 spec oil filter is up to the task. How does this Fleece filter stack up? I think Audi's oil filter technology was only developed in 2001? What are my options with 2nd supplier oil filters, and where can you buy? What about air filters?? for a Diesel?
One more question, does this thing have the 722.6 tranny? I am away on biz, so I don't have the car specs>
Regards,
Bill

oem

filter at autohausaz.com
fleece filter refers to the material and fss cars need it yours does not.
Keep changing it like you are and you will be fine.
97 300d has the 5speed 722.6 trans and needs to be drained and new filter installed.
I have the dipstick,autohausaz.com has the fluid and filter
$20 oil?what are you using?

I am not using anthing yet, I will go with MB fluid. I bought the 97 E300D with 65k MB documented service. I see they did something at 65k. Need more detail from them. Changing out the fluid is something I plan on doing soon. I will probably change out the coolant as well. Do most people stick with MB coolant?
