Deeper more powerful exhaust sound?

Ive got a 97 e420 with the v8 and the exhaust doesnt sound anything like a v8 at all. i want a better sounding exhaust. would it sound good if i just removed my resonator? or would it sound better if i went and bought a remus exhaust and removed the resonator as well?

Remove the resonator and install a standard h pipe

not a pricey x pipe, just past the trans mount. It will give a pleasant sound and not sound like an old motor boat.

Ohlord, can you elaborate on the diff between the h-pipe and the x-pipe - performance wise and sound/noise too? Besides cost, why do you recommend the H over the X? Thanks.

On the small v8

the exhaust pulse that negates each other from both banks of cylinders is not as great as on lets say a stroked small block chevy,so the x pipe is not needed an H pipe straight across bleeds enough pressure wave across to temper some of the putt putt motor boat sound so common on v8's with no cross over pipe.
A few more ft lbs. of torque down low in the rev range, and the mellow note at idle and a pleasant note when you hop on it.
Any good custom exhaust shop can splice in an H pipe.

I would recommend starting with deleting the resonator.......I can tell you that it won't be as loud or sound like a BMW but after all it is a Benz. I researched the Remus but the product didn't get rave reviews and isn't cheap.

Just do the resonator delete and the H pipe

The 420 will come to life.

horn3t,
i second your point on the V8 sound.... lots of underused potential if you ask me!
i also wanna "hear" my V8.... but not as much so that they can hear me coming one town ahead
ll look up what they call a "resonator" here in germanland, and who can do the Hpipe mod (thx for the tip, ohlord the almighty!)
have to be careful here with technical inspection (due this week) but after that good for "discrete mods" another 2yrs (till next inspection).
if you have any update (pls pics or soundfile, that would be great!!!! pm me otherwise, much appreciated)....
cheers

I'll never understand why people who buy sedate mercedes sedans want to hear their engines, but a resonator delete is a good start.

get much of a diff...with reso delete, if you want it a little louder i would start with the muffler delete. if tha's too loud..then go with only reso delete
