More pictures on the way...

I've taken some more photos of the installation, including the location of the control switch. Give me a few more days to get everything processed...

Thumbs up Great Job!!

PA:

You've done a fantastic job of documenting the whole process. Besides the questions already asked, how long did it take you?

I spent 2 hours over the weekend repairing the garage door frame that won the battle against our minivan mirror a few years ago! I shudder to think about that happening to our E430! We'll definitely consider this mod!

Livetodrive, you are too kind!

It was a fun mod, despite the drudgery of having to modify the wiring. I was fortunate in that I had already installed the motorized rear window sunshade before attempting this work. Much of what I had to do was a repeat of the sunshade project (eg., making the connection at the fuse box, running wire under the seats, cutting in a new switch). I learned a lot, and isn't that what it's all about anyway?

Besides...it really impresses the "lady" when she sees the car without seats...parts strewn all over the garage and driveway, and wires hanging everywhere. (Remember: YOU are the only one who realizes you really don't know what you're doing...). Consider the alternative: going shopping with her ("Rich, does this orange handbag make me look fat?" GULP....).

I'd say the whole job took about 12 hours overall. I will also admit to being a perfectionist when it comes to my MB, so others might get it done quicker. Total cost was right around $400.00.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

does the folding mirrors have the blinkers built in?

HI,

does the folding mirrors have the blinkers built in?

From which mercedes model is the folding mirror from?

Do you have to cut a hole in the wood dash for the new switch?

Thanks

Ed

The folding mechanism is from a W210. I re-used the mirror shells (covers) that came with the car. So, yes, I still have the blinking feature.

As I mentioned before, control the switch is mounted in the center console (to the immediate right of the mirror adjustment control).

Adding the control switch

Here are a set of photos showing how I modified the center console for the new switch. The real key to doing this is having patience...and a steady hand. The results are not perfect, but then again I saved $$$ compared with buying a factory-made unit with the appropriate cutouts.

The finished switch mounting (the rear window shade switch was also a retrofit this past summer).

Great Work!

Hi,

I think you did a great job on the mod! they look great!

I noticed that you have the Pioneer Navigation system installed in your car and you are planning to upgrade to COMMAND 2.0 soon?

Can you please post a pic of your car with the Pioneer Navigation? Please post one pic with the screen open and another with the scrren closed. Please! As I am seriously considering getting it for my E420.

Is there any reason you would want to upgrade to COMMAND over the Pioneer Navigation System? What is the advantage of the COMMAND over the Pioneer? Which one would you recommend?

Thanks!

Ed

For cabby850

Ed,

See my thoughts on this thread:

https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...ghlight=COMAND

I don't have any pictures of the Pioneer System yet, but be patient and I will try to take some in the near future.

PA28150, I'm thinking about adding the folding mirrors to my 2001. Did you notice your pictures are gone? Is it possible to repost them?
Also, how have the mirrors worked since you modified them?
I know Steve supplies the mirrors, but how about the cables?
Also, could you give me a quick explanation on how to remove the seats?
Thanks in advance.

Pictures would be nice

I am also very interested in this mod as I have just bought mirrors to replace my dodgy standard ones. And it turns out I got folding ones. without indicators.
If I find pictures i'll post again or its wait and see.

pictures are gone

Hi PA28150

As a newcomer and after reading your great job, I think it's a pity to loose all your expertise...

I'm also quite interested in installing the folding units in my pre-restyling E320, and I can asure you this is the best explanation for doing this I've read all along the web.

So I think many people around here will be very grateful if you are able to post all the pictures again (I know that you have to fight again with the machine for a long time to reload everything).

Best regards

PICTURES ARE BACK!

Thanks to ALL who've expressed interest in this modification over the years!

I am very happy to say that I found the original photos (a victory in itself!) that accompanied the modification write up. You'll find everything in the attached .pdf file, including an edited description.

Good luck to anyone who'd like to make this upgrade -- and thanks for your patience.

Rich

P.S. I have all the parts to complete the heated steering wheel upgrade on my 2006 E320 CDI. I'll be reporting on that too! Soon...I hope.
