98 key doesnt work any more

hey guys,

I have 2 keys for my 98 e430, one works perfectly, both the remote and in the ignition. the other seems to have some problems with the remote (seems like the connection from the battery to the circuit board is not conductive enough, and also it doesnt seem like it gets recognized by the ignition (ie, there is no click when I put the key in)

does the circuit board have anything to do with the key being accepted by the ignition system? I assumed that only the key jacket is read by the ignition system, and thats why the spare blade doesnt require a battery.

yes? no?

tonite I am going to swap the key jackets so that the working key jacket has the non-working circuit board.

thx

Found my answer on page 3 of a search.

Turns out that the circuit board is required because it emites an infrared light that is picked up bu the ignition circuit.

Now I just need to fix the battery to circuit board connection.

thx

300E a couple 1994 w124wagon E320 Wagon/,1971MGB Track/Rally, MG Midget Autocross ,2000 E320 wagon.
The key

when installed into the ignition is not powered by the key's battery at all it is powered by an inductive circuit from the cars battery.
thus you could have a dead key battery open the door with the blade key and still start the car with the key with the dead battery in it.

Replace battery in key if not locking or unlocking doors; and hang on tighter as they're expensive to replace.

Question replaced key batteries - worked for two days - dead again argh

I'm having the same problem. The key stopped working so I went to Radio Shack and bought the two flat batteries that fit inside, and the key then worked for a couple of days just fine unlocking and locking remotely, then it died again. I put in two new batteries and it didn't work at all. The batteries are around 10 bucks each so they're not crappy cheap ones... is there a special rechargeable or mercedes specific battery I'm supposed to use? Does the key need reprograming once it dies completely?

Because of the genius engineer who didn't put a keyhole on the driver's side, I've been doing this goofy routine of unlocking the passenger side for my imaginary friend, and then walking around the car to climb in the driver's side. Or unlocking the trunk and then looking like I changed my mind, decided not to even open it, and then went to get in through the driver's door. Lol.
