AT Fluid & Filter Change E430
I am starting a new thread as my question was burried in my previous post under A & B Service.
I am contemplating doing this service myself especially since reading the excellent post with pics on this forum.
However, I called the MB Dealer and was quoted $270 for this service. My question is what do you guys think? Is this a fair charge or would you suggest DIY. About how much would it run for parts to DIY?
Thanks and regards.
Joe
That price includes a new filter and gasket for the pan of course.
It does not look too hard to do...if you are weekend mechanic..should not be a problem.
It helps to have a lift...makes it much easier to do... and it can get messy so
I just had it done by a professional.
The dealer in my area wanted $400+....I don't think so
8*15 for 7226 trans fluid from
www.autohausaz.com
filter and gasket
I ship the dipstick and pan magnet pm me for $
and tips and diy info
plus use
www.mercedesshop.com
diy
and I have more info
you can do it.
and you might as well replace the connector for the electrical while down there (it is a problem issue)
that if leaks will cause you to be up the creek.

We inspected the connector on my car and it was dry so we did not replace it. It is easy to get to if I need to replace later if I see signs of it starting to get wet with oil.
For some reason mine did not have a magnet in the pan....
Use the fluid for the 722.9 trans (#3353), its backward compatible to the 722.6, cheaper and has better friction properties. dealer will use the new fluid when the current supply of old fluid is exhausted. Get the magnet too A 220 271 00 98.
You'll need the factory tool dip stick or the measurements for the business end of it (PM me) and some way (IR thermo) of knowing the internal fluid temp. Current spec is to ignore the 40C end of the stick and ONLY fill to the 80C mark.
Some V8's used more fluid (~9l vs 7.5l) than the 6's did. Check your manual and/or carefully measure what is removed.
follow my instructions for filling and you need no ir thermo the trans temp is the coolant temp when filled to near capacity and warmed properly.
Fill level is to top of 80c mark reduces aeration and gives better shift quality.

do it every 40k miles and the trans will live as long as the engine
I'll agree there is a relationship between trans fluid temp and coolant temp, but not that they are the same. This is why the trans has an internal fluid temp sensor accessed via SDS.
IMO, lacking a IR thermo and shooting the bottom of the pan, one is better off carefully collecting and measuring drained fluid and replacing with like amount. Assuming no leaks or spills that is fairly accurate and final fill can then be fine tuned using the dip stick to make up the extra couple of ounces retained by the old filter, etc.

Filling to near drained capacity and shifting through the gears while doing so,and then a 15 minute drive and final check to mid point has always worked fine for ones Ive done Follow up the next day with slow top off to top 80c mark.
IR is handy to have you are correct.Besides it comes in handy to check bad cats

The main thing people miss on these trans is to make dead sure no linty rags are used to clean the pan or to wipe anything inside the trans body.An absolute clean dust free lint free area,or the trans can get real bad real quick.
