Trans stuck in W mode, Ohlord?

Another member emailed me with a problem. His transmission is stuck in Winter mode and will not use first gear unless he manually shifts it there. Any idea what might be the problem before he has to bite the bullet and go see the dealer?

The 1,2,3,4 gears manually selected are all electronically activated.the regular prnd are mechanical linkage in the shift unit.As well is the w mode that starts the car off in 2nd gear.Did he spill anything down there?
Has he tried a reset of the ecu and tcu by disconnecting the battery neg terminal?
Have him call me if he doesn't know how and i can talk him through it.
pm me for phone #
he also needs to check the shifter bushing to make sure it has not failed.
If he shifts manually does it go through all the gears

Hi oh lord
It is me with the shifter issue. I have not spilled anything in the shifter area.It does manually shift through all the gears up and down. When the switch is set to summer and is in D when I apply pressure to the left to manually bring it to first, it stops at second gear. Same happens in W mode. Only on initial startup will it start off in first. Is your recommendation to reset the ECU? Not familiar with that procedure. Will just disconnecting the negative cable on the battery do the trick? Thanks for any input.
