Is this a common problem?

My radio/cd/tape volume is malfunctioning too, but the malfunction seems to be with the knob. When the knob is turned up the volume usually goes up, sometimes it stays the same, every once in a while it will go down. Same thing when turning it down. The ratio is off too. Sometimes one click to the right will turn the volume much too high and other times several clicks will only turn it up a little. I've lived with it so far, but it seems to be getting worse.

Would replacing the head unit fix the problem?
