Economy Car Sound

Economy Car Sound
I have a 2000 E-320, and this is my second Mercedes. I really like everything about the car except the loud engine. This just seems unacceptable for a $60,000 "Luxury" car. I have driven economy cars that were much quieter! It's pretty quiet in cruse, but when you accelerate it is very loud. The combination of the rough shifting transmission and the noise coming from the engine bay makes it sound like I am using a manual shifter. Even from the outside of the car at idle, it sounds almost like a diesel engine, and there is a noticeable shake. Why is it that Lexus can build a comparable car that is as quiet and smooth as silk? My friend has one with 200,000 miles on the odometer that puts my 'E to shame. If this is a design criteria so that you can "feel the car", I wish they would design it out. This really bugs me because I like everything else about the car, and I would really like to buy a new one, but I am having second thoughts. And don't even get me started on their ancient electronics

I had a 97 E320 with a inline 6 ,and it was smooth and quiet all the way up to 126mph which was limited by the computer.
AND I WILL NEVER BUY A lexus ,you can't feel the road and has no charater.

My 97 E420 runs very quietly and smooth, even at 100+ mph. I actually like the sound the engine makes, it sounds strong, but not loud or annoying. My transmission also shifts very smoothly. I hardly notice it. Have someone look at your car, there may be a fix to your problems.
Good luck.

96 E 320 and 87 560 SL
MBCL500, Did MB start limiting top speed in 97? My 96 E320 with an inline 6 lists a top speed of 146, although I have only taken it to 135.
btw, even at 101k miles it is still smooth as silk and exceptionally quiet.

It's problem of 320 engine. Some people prefer 320 over 430 because engine sound. They like to hear feedback. Indeed, 430 just accelerates without any sound, so for some people it ins't acceptable. So select for your 3rd car E500.

This either could be one of two things:
Problems with your car in particular?
OR
Mercedes Philosophy.
For the latter, I would have to agree with Mercedes. An engine should be quiet, but not that quiet that you don't hear it, Mercedes engines run very quietly, but explode and scream when pushed hard, at least the car lets you know the engine is here.
Even the S500/CL500, even teh new S600 V12 makes a noticeable and distinctive sound when pushed, so if you want real quiet, buy any japanese car like a Lexus, I on the other hand will stick with MB.
