your local dealer is about the best bet. no online method of attaining this.
if it's the high price which is preventing you from buying local, about the only
thing you can do is to find out if there is a dealer selling for cheaper than
your dealer, then going there in person to purchase. but the cost of traveling
is undoubtedly going to exceed the price difference. price range is $160-250+

From what I've read, all the new keys are now chrome so that's what you'll get from any dealer. I have seen DuVal Motors (MB dealer) mentioned and they apparently are selling the key + insert for about $160.00.

I'd worry about the chrome keys. Do you think they will get scratchy like the chomre on the back of my ipod?

I got mine for a over a year now, kept it in my pocket all the time when I go out. The chrome is not that bad shape, only micro scratches. the key chain got more scratches and paint chip than chrome on the key. I guess they made the chrome tough and durable to resist major deep scratches.

i have keys and loose change in my pocket and I would have obsessed about
the nicks and scratches....especially when I was fortunate enough to have been
one of the lucky one's paying $60 before MB slammed the door on this great buy.
So I ordered the leather cover for the gen2 key and used it on the gen3/chrome
key. Though not perfectttttly sized, it was 95% good enough. I used the gen1
black lastic Smartkey for casual driving around, and the leather covered gen3
when the setting is more formal.

I have a couple of those and don't like the fit so my gen3 key is naked. Most of the time since I've had it, it's been sitting on my desk. I was worried about scratches too but after reading this, I might put it back into action.

Wow, raymond g- has different keys for different occasions! That's the first time I heard that one!

Got a few scratches and pits in the Gen3 key. But oh well, not a big deal, just be careful, but if it scratches there's nothing you can do about it.

i actually bought a pair of covers (sold that way) and with one, I had wetted
and tried to form around the gen3 chrome key. it was progressing nicely
and drying ...... until the puppy got a hold of it. i didn't want to buy another
cover so just settled with the so-so fit. I do see slightly different styles and
vendors for these covers, so they vary a little in fit, i suppose.

heh heh...as far as I 'm concern, he can have just about
anything he wants...within reason. but I hold the line on
letting him in the Benz. otherwise, he's my Buddy

Very handsome animal. I have a pet, but it's not a dog.
