Winner in terms of racing or ownership experience and reliability. I have owned Audi's and they require a big maintenance every 60K miles (timing belt, pump etc).
The maintenance alone is enough for me to stay away from Audi's.

I have owned both A8 and E430 4Matics before. I liked the subtle elegance of the A8 but you are right about the costly scheduled maintenances.
E430 though, I had trouble with the LCD in Ins. Cluster as well as headgasket. Also, Quattro is all time AWD Vs. 4Matic is a "On Demand"system that requires major maintenance if it goes wrong..

Wouldn't a fairer comparison be;
A6 4.2 Quatro vs. E430 4Matic Or
A8 vs. S Class
Sticking to A8 vs. E Class..... I would have to come down on the side of the Audi, assuming you are looking for a 4 door luxury sedan, with comfort for 4.
If you are trending toward a spotier ride, then obviously the E plays better to that market.

In general, and in my humble opinion, Audi cannot hold a candle to Mercedes. They are better than they used to be, but think they are different animals. Porsches, on the other hand, seem to be excellent cars and I've always felt the Audi was the red headed stepchild. BTW, I have owned Porsche 911s but never an Audi so I can't speak with a lot of personal experience. I have only rented a couple of Audis when the Porsche was in the shop.
