Question Speedometer Display Problem ...

Hi, this is my first post here. I just bought a 2001 E220. It has a 'digitally broken' display in the two small meters that show the clock, temp, gears etc.
A picture is attached to make it clear. Please let me know if this is possible to fix and how. Thanks!

The fault is poor connections on the ribbon cable interconnects. we take them apart and make little wedges from plastic or rubber to pack out the connections and make a good contact.

We have many firms in the UK that do this,,but I know nothing of the USA market

Hello Ahtasham and welcome to the forum. This is a production defect of VDO instruments affecting also some BMW vehicles.

Here's a link to the fix;

Hope it helps.

Thanks Franasia. I actually worked on my car last night following the exact same DIY that you have mentioned. But it worked half way for me. I got the temp display on to 100%. Though it reads -38C but that's probably my temp sensor. However, the the gear & clock display didn't even improve to 1%. I gave it around 6-7 tries with various objects of different thickness but nothing seems to work ...

Any idea why ???

Not sure ... have you tried wiggling the ribbon cable with the cluster connected? That's what really makes the difference ... it worked great for me.

Yes I have tried that. I think the connection is too damaged to work like that. Anyway, I still got the temp one working so it was worth it!
